The Senior Specialist Environmental Scientist will be a key member of Environmental Planning at Caltrans District 1. The incumbent will be an environmental team lead on Project Development Teams for the delivery of transportation projects throughout Caltrans District 1. The Senior Specialist Environmental Scientist will be critical in identifying and furthering ways to avoid and minimize environmental impacts and contribute to enhancements within Caltrans District
1. Under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor) for Environmental Planning, the Senior Specialist Environmental Scientist plans and executes the complex environmental studies required to facilitate project delivery. The incumbent will act as team leader to gather, research, and analyze social, natural, and environmental data for preparation, review, and processing of environmental documents considering the impacts of transportation projects as mandated by federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Environmental Scientist Generalist/Coordinator

Classification: SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST (SPECIALIST) $7,820.00 - $10,732.00. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Education:

Possession of a bachelor’s or advanced degree with a major in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline. An admission to a masters or doctoral degree program in these fields shall be considered to meet these qualifications.

Either 1

Experience:

Two years of experience in the California state civil service performing the duties of an Environmental Scientist, Range

C.

Or 2

Experience:

Five years of increasingly responsible professional experience as a scientist in environmental analysis, research, management, planning, regulation, or investigation, two years of which included responsibility in the development or implementation of environmental policies, programs, plans, or research projects; or conducting an environmental monitoring and surveillance, enforcement, or environmental management program; or in the direction of the work of a multidisciplinary environmental investigatory or regulatory staff, at a level equivalent to Environmental Scientist, Range

C. Possession of a master's degree may substitute for one year of the required general experience; possession of a doctorate may substitute for two years.
