LUMCON, a program of the Board of Regents, is a statewide academic consortium focused on marine science to address environmental and socioeconomic challenges in Louisiana and beyond.

LUMCON offers opportunities in marine science and education, anchored by the DeFelice Marine Center, located in Louisiana’s wetlands near the Gulf of Mexico. The center operates a fleet of research vessels, and in 2023, it is expanding with a new maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.

LUMCON is accepting applications for the position of Ordinary Seaman.

• High school diploma and at least three years of vessel operation experience.
• Physical strength and dexterity to perform duties, including heavy lifting and working in inclement weather.
• Ability to wear and use personal protective equipment as necessary.
• Successful passing of drug and alcohol screening tests as per Department of Transportation regulations.

• Assist the Captain/First Mate with vessel operations such as cargo handling, line handling, docking, and machinery operation.
• Perform vessel maintenance including repairs, cleaning, painting, and equipment checks.
• Conduct sanitation duties like laundry and garbage removal.
• Maintain waterfront areas, including dock cleaning.
• Support field sampling activities and oceanographic research.
• Participate in research projects as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
