OverviewThis job administers anesthesia to patients during surgical, obstetrical, and other pain producing clinical procedures under the supervision of a physician. The role works in a collaborative model including residents, fellows, attendings, and staff who care for patients.
Educational Requirements- Master’s degree from a school of nurse anesthesia accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).
- None required.
- License as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of practice.
- Certification through the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification from the American Heart Association.
- Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and patient information retrieval.
- Proficiency with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule (24/7, weekend, holiday, on-call availability).
- Documents patient procedures and incidents.
- Assesses patient before, during, and after administering anesthesia.
- Ensures patient safety and administers anesthesia following accepted practice techniques.
- Acts as a liaison to surgeons, anesthesiologists, co-workers, patients, and families.
- Participates in department quality assurance initiatives and activities of professional development.
- Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy, introduction, and communication style.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Remain knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Ensure compliance with all laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
- Report any known or suspected unethical or questionable behaviors.
- Maintain compliance and privacy program standards.
Medium Work:
Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Must stand for prolonged periods. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue. Occupational risk for exposure to communicable disease and hazardous medications and waste exists.
