Overview
Influential position dedicated to the development, implementation, and promotion of a safe, accident‑free, and healthy work culture. In addition, conducts impactful training programs for employees at all levels in the organization, from new hire orientations to department teams.
This position is designated as an essential role employee during emergency situations involving safety concerns and requires immediate availability to respond as needed.
Qualifications- Six years of experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, safety education or promotion, risk management, or administrative services
- Six years of full‑time work experience plus three years of experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, safety education or promotion, risk management, or administrative services
- A bachelor’s degree plus three years of experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, safety education or promotion, risk management, or administrative services
- An advanced degree plus two years of experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, safety education or promotion, risk management, or administrative services
- Experience substitution: every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience toward the six years of full‑time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours, which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
- Conduct field inspections, audits, and safety observations to identify hazards, assess work practices, and recommend corrective and preventive actions to reduce safety and environmental risks.
- Manage the Compliance Safety Management System to track incidents, inspections, audits, training, JSA, action items, and key safety performance metrics.
- Collaborate with management, Port Captains, engineers, vessel crews, and external partners to evaluate hazardous work processes and ensure compliance with OSHA, ANSI, and industry best practices.
- Develop, implement, and oversee employee safety training programs, including new hire orientations, recurrent training, emergency response, and on-the-job instruction.
- Maintain, revise, and distribute the Board’s Safety Manual, safety policies, JSA, and training materials to ensure alignment with current standards and guidance.
- Establish annual safety and training goals, analyze KPIs (including TRIR), prepare reports and lessons learned, and present findings to leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Serve as Chair of the Board Safety Committee, facilitating bi‑monthly meetings to review incidents, determine corrective actions, and promote a strong safety culture.
- Coordinate safety initiatives across departments and with external entities, including Risk Management, Facilities, Harbor Police/Fire Vessel, Legal, and NOPB.
- Oversee safety supplies, training resources, and budgets to support effective safety and compliance programs.
- Administer the Motor Vehicle Safety Program by reviewing driving records, coordinating driver training, addressing unsafe driving complaints, and managing insurance‑related requirements.
