About This Position

The Ferryboat Deckhand provides assistance to passenger vehicles while boarding and on board.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications

No experience or training is required.

Note – Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) may be required at the time of appointment.

Job Duties
  • Classifies vehicles and registers class and axles of each vehicle boarding the vessel, enforces restrictions when necessary, collects appropriate toll, processes changes, and issues receipts. Completes vessel passenger and vehicle count sheets.
  • Performs security and safety checks on vehicles boarding and while the vessel is underway. Fastens and loosens hawsers and mooring lines to piers. Operates bilge pumps, traffic ramps, and gates on vessel. Lowers and raises anchors, coils and splices rope for fenders, and makes eyes in cable. Performs routine maintenance such as cleaning, chipping, scraping, painting, changing oil and filters, polishing bright work, etc.

    Loads and unloads material and equipment for use on vehicle.
  • Serves as designated member of the crew in accordance with the requirement of the vessel's Coast Guard Certificates of Inspection. Assumes control of vessel in the event the Master becomes incapacitated and practices those duties weekly.
Position Specific Details

Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment

Career Progression: This position may be filled as Ferryboat Deckhand I, II, or III depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).

Compensation
  • Ferryboat Deckhand I – $1,284.80 bi‑weekly
  • Ferryboat Deckhand II – $1,374.40 bi‑weekly
  • Ferryboat Deckhand III – $1,573.60 bi‑weekly

All three positions include:

• Premium Pay for Hours Actually Worked: $2.00 per hour

• Shift Differential Pay: $1.75 per hour
