As an Ophthalmic Access Assistant, you will obtain authorization and referral clearance for all ophthalmology appointments, serve as liaison between insurance companies, referring physicians, patients, and the Department of Ophthalmology, and act as Financial Counselor for fee‑for‑service appointments.
Responsibilities- Obtain authorization and referral clearance for all Ophthalmology appointments and enter approval into the system linking to the appointment.
- Contact referring and/or primary care physicians to discuss diagnosis and obtain appropriate coverage for initial and follow‑up care.
- Act as liaison between insurance companies, referring physicians, primary care physicians, patients and the Department of Ophthalmology on all referral and authorization issues.
- Serve as Financial Counselor for fee‑for‑service appointments and elective procedures, collecting fees and ensuring appropriate posting to patient accounts.
- Perform specific scheduling protocols for all subspecialty Ophthalmology practices (Glaucoma, Retina, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Low Vision, Refractive Surgery, Occupational Medicine).
- Work closely with the Coordinator and Team Leader in the implementation of policies, procedures and goals of the Clinic.
- Remain knowledgeable on current federal, state and local laws, accreditation standards and regulatory agency requirements, ensuring compliance.
- Report any known or suspected unethical or questionable behaviors or conduct, patient/employee safety, and privacy concerns.
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Work Experience: None required; preferred 6 months related experience.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval.
- Effective verbal and written communication; ability to present information clearly and professionally.
- Proficiency with Windows-style applications and specific software packages.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Excellent transcription skills.
- Strong decision‑making and problem‑resolution skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize daily assignments.
- Job Duties:
- Provides patient care.
- Schedules and ensures continuity of care.
- Coordinates referrals.
- Coordinates financial activities.
Medium Work:
Exerting 20–50 pounds of force occasionally, 10–25 pounds frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods and may use mechanical lifting devices or team lifts.
