This position involves applying ionizing radiation to oncology patients in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist. The therapist maintains accurate treatment records, processes orders for specific exams, acts as a liaison between physician, patient and family, and monitors patients for adverse reactions during therapy. Care is provided based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to patient ages in the assigned area.
EducationGraduate of an accredited program in Radiation Therapy Technology.
Work ExperienceRequired – None.
Preferred – Experience in fabrication of contours, cases and patient immobilization devices.
CertificationsRegistered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Licensed by the Louisiana State Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)- Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval.
- Proficiency with Windows-style applications, keyboard, and role‑specific software.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to present information clearly to varying levels of individuals.
- Understanding of all utilized equipment, its use and care.
- Ability to chart accurately and maintain all data pertinent to patient therapy and care.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Extensive knowledge of radiation therapy concepts, applications and administration.
- Administers radiation therapy to patients in accordance with prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist.
- Documents port films and treatment chart.
- Requests specific exams required during the course of therapy such as simulations for field changes and boost fields within required time frame to ensure smooth, uninterrupted course of therapy.
- Maintains a daily patient treatment schedule.
- Performs quality control duties and performs weekly chart checks.
- Performs daily treatment machine quality assurance.
- Documents and submits all billing for patients under treatment daily.
- Exhibits flexibility in scheduling and staffing practices to accommodate department needs.
Frequent exertion of 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; occasional exertion up to 100 pounds. Physical demands exceed those for sedentary work. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.
