Position: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION SPECIALIST (CLASS CODE 5281)

qualifications & experience
  • high school graduation or g.e.d.*
  • valid driver's license.*
  • either: permanent status as a crime scene investigation specialist associate with the city of new orleans and one year of crime scene experience.
  • or: two (2) years of full-time experience in crime scene investigation.*

* sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university with at least twelve (12) credit hours in criminal justice, chemistry, biology, forensic science, or a closely related scientific field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Official transcripts must be presented to the new orleans civil service department within two (2) weeks of application.

an associate’s degree is preferred.

* prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify education and driver's license claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.

this position requires a one-year probationary period.

a rating of training and experience, weighted 100%, will consider all related previous experience; credit on the rating will only be given for related experience gained within the last ten (10) years.

administrative & background requirements

the police department will conduct a background investigation which will include a voice stress test, a urinalysis to detect usage of illegal narcotic substances, and a check of arrest and conviction record.

background checks, substance abuse testing, medical and psychological examinations are required as per city civil service rules. A medical examination is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to active classifications, and a medical screening may be required for non‑active classifications. The city of new orleans has a comprehensive program of substance abuse testing; candidates will undergo pre‑employment screening and an unannounced screening during probation.

good moral character is required. Any applicant may be disqualified if his/her character or past employment record is found to be unsatisfactory. Forgery, misrepresentation of facts, or cheating on examinations is punishable by disqualification and fines.

veterans preference is available. Disabled veterans and certain spouses/parents may receive additional credit if claimed, with required documentation submitted by the final filing date.

domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application, but domicile in orleans parish must be established within 180 days of hire for new full‑time employees, except for certain positions. Quality service requirements may earn exceptions on a case‑by‑case basis.

applicants must be 18 years of age or older and meet physical, equipment, and hazardous condition requirements as per louisiana state child labor law.
