Position Concept
The individual who holds this position will assist the Chief Financial Officer in the reporting and analysis of the financial activities of the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe most important and essential job duty of this position is attitude and includes the following: getting along with co-workers, being respectful to members of the community, making sure all employees under his/her command are working together as a team and functioning under pressure. Other duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Assists with the responsibility for budget activities, accounting, and internal auditing
- Assists with the administration of payroll and accounts receivable
- Participates in planning department-wide budget estimates based on immediate and anticipated operational requirements
- Assists with the preparation of quarterly statement of budget-to-actual comparisons for review by CFO and/or the Sheriff
- Assists with year-end tax filings, including W-2s, 1099s and 1095s
- Reviews 941 Quarterly filings
- Monitors recording of all assets in Asset Manage software and proper implementation and documentation of annual inspection of all assets
- Assists with preparations for interim, preliminary, and annual audits.
- Other job duties as assigned by the Sheriff and/or his designee.

- Knowledgeable of accounting principles, methods, and budgetary controls
- Knowledgeable of data available for developing reports and the accounting and statistical methods for summarizing data for managerial decisions
- Knowledgeable of audit procedures
- Knowledgeable in operation and use of all standard office equipment
- Knowledgeable in all programs within the Microsoft Office Suite
- Bachelor’s Degree from a four (4) year university with the degree being in Business Administration; preferably Accounting
- Two (2) years of accounting experience, governmental preferred but not required
- Ability to read and comprehend reports and manuals
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, command staff and the general public – in person and over the telephone
- Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics
- Ability to deal with situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness, and judgement
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
- Current and Valid Louisiana Driver’s License
