Job Summary
The Senior Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and underwriting risk for ACH payment services by conducting detailed reviews of financial stability, creditworthiness, and overall exposure. This role makes informed, confident credit decisions and recommendations, ensuring the safe and efficient onboarding and monitoring of ACH clients. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in ACH payments, strong analytical judgment, and the ability to assess complex risk profiles while upholding compliance and organizational standards.
Responsibilities- Manage inbound and outbound calls to support underwriting and merchant servicing needs.
- Maintain and prioritize the underwriting inbox using the ticketing system, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution.
- Conduct comprehensive KYC/KYB reviews, including identity verification, financial statement analysis, tax return review, and assessment of merchant processing history to evaluate risk and creditworthiness.
- Interpret and analyze financial statements to determine merchant stability, exposure, and overall risk profile.
- Deliver clear, professional verbal and written communication to internal teams, merchants, and external partners.
- Ensure merchants operate in full compliance with NACHA rules, guidelines, and monitoring requirements.
- Perform periodic audits on approved merchant accounts to validate ongoing compliance and detect adverse changes in risk.
- Conduct enhanced due diligence (EDD) on high-risk clients and escalate concerns when appropriate.
- Meet daily Support SLA requirements through timely review, decisioning, and documentation.
- Assist with merchant onboarding, application review, and other underwriting tasks as needed.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned to support department goals.
- Minimum of 5 years of payment underwriting experience, preferably within ACH or credit card processing.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Experience in bankcard and/or ACH underwriting.
- Experience working in a banking environment.
- Strong working knowledge of the banking and payments industry.
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications including Access, Word, Excel, Outlook, and general online research; technologically savvy with ability to learn new systems quickly.
- Strong multitasking ability with effective prioritization skills.
- High level of integrity and dedication to customer satisfaction.
- Demonstrated passion for excellence in customer communication and service.
- Professional, patient, and friendly demeanor when interacting with merchants and internal teams.
- Excellent attention to detail, listening skills, and both written and verbal communication abilities.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including overtime when necessary.
- Strong work ethic with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with shifting priorities.
