NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
As part of the Geismar Engineering Team, the Process Control Engineer will support the safe, reliable, and competitive operation of process automation systems and the operating plant. This role contributes to ongoing plant operations, with a focus on control scheme performance monitoring, optimization, design, and alarm management. This position offers an exciting opportunity to gain handson experience in world scale petrochemical plant operations.
YouWill Use Your Expertise To:
- Support and implement control applications and Advanced Process Controllers (APC) to enhance plant profitability, operational stability, and safety.
- Ensure base-layer control performance is optimized and consistently performing at a high standard.
- Identify and implement improvements such as smart alarming and high performance graphics to strengthen operators’ ability to safely and effectively run the unit.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to advance control strategies while ensuring alignment with corporate process control standards and best practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering with 8+ years of process control engineering experience for petrochemical plants working with Honeywell Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Advanced Process Control applications.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing Advanced Process Control (APC) applications, including Rockwell Pavilion APC, Honeywell Profit Suite, or Aspen Tech DMC
3. - Experience with control system migrations is considered an asset.
- Strong background in controller design, model identification, and APC–DCS interface programming.
- Hands‑on experience supporting and configuring regulatory control algorithms within Honeywell Experion DCS environments.
- Proven capability designing and implementing basic and advanced regulatory control strategies to optimize process performance, including feed forward control, constraint control, optimization, cross‑limiting, and abnormal situation management.
- Experience programming in real‑time environments, including automation and state‑based control using functional logic blocks and multiple control languages (such as Visual Basic, JScript, and Python).
- Solid understanding of process control theory fundamentals applied to core petrochemical processes, including distillation columns, reactors, boilers, and fired heaters.
- Practical experience tuning PID controllers to achieve stable and efficient control performance.
Experience with Human‑Machine Interface (HMI) design, programming, and configuration for process automation systems. - Knowledge of alarm management best practices, including alarm database management, alarm rationalization, and smart alarming.
