Responsibilities
- Check and start all machinery on board the ferry; ensure readiness at shift start.
- Check steering fluids, oil, water, fuel levels, steering equipment, radar, radio, and other operational systems.
- Inspect firefighting equipment, bow thruster, and main engines throughout the shift.
- Make adjustments to landing dock ramps for vehicle entry and exit as needed.
- Transfer fuel and water when required; replace engine filters when necessary.
- Maintain logs of operations.
- Report to the Ferry Captain III.
- High School Diploma or GED supplemented by three to four years’ experience in engine work or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- United States Coast Guard Chief Engineer license with a minimum of 3,000 horsepower, or a Chief Engineer of Motor Ferry Vessels license (3,000 HP or less operated by governmental bodies), or Chief Engineer limited Oceans or Near Coastal license.
- Good physical condition, including back, vision, and hearing.
- Valid Louisiana Driver’s License with satisfactory records.
- Honesty and good moral/ethical behavior.
This examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview, or any combination thereof. Qualified applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled test(s). Applications received after the Final Filing Date will not be accepted. All examination qualification requirements must be met by the Final Filing Date.
