OVERVIEW

TAI is actively searching for a Weight Control Engineer to join our team in New Orleans, LA. Under close supervision, the Weight Control Engineer performs routine assignments that are clearly defined and require the application of standard design techniques, procedures and criteria. Activities are directly initiated, supervised and reviewed by more senior level specialists and engineers. The Weight Control Engineer is responsible for supporting the development, monitoring, and maintenance of vessel weight and stability data throughout the design, construction, and delivery phases. This role ensures accuracy in weight estimates and reporting, assists in managing weight margins, and contributes to stability assessments in compliance with regulatory requirements and customer specifications. The position requires close coordination with design disciplines, shipyard teams, and vendors to collect, verify, and integrate weight data into ship design documentation.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None.

EDUCATION:

A 4-year degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline is required.

Advanced coursework in ship stability, hydrostatics, or weight engineering is a plus.

QUALIFICATIONS AND

EXPERIENCE:

  • Preferred experience:

    1 year in Weight Control Engineering or related functional area (or equivalent working knowledge/experience).
  • Familiarity with ship weight control practices, weight estimation methods, and basic stability principles.
  • Experience establishing weight control standards for marine projects and implementing them throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Experience using engineering and weight management software tools is preferred (e.g., Ship Weight, NAPA, or similar).
  • Understanding of SAWE recommended practices and guidelines.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft products, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to analyze technical data, prepare reports, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in data management and documentation.

TYPICAL

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in preparing and maintaining weight estimates during concept, preliminary, and detail design phases.
  • Prepare weight estimates in support of proposals and new construction programs in accordance with SAWE recommended practices and contractual requirements.
  • Collect, verify, and integrate vendor, subcontractor, and internal discipline weight data using datasheets, documents, manuals, drawings and 3D models.
  • Maintain weight control records, databases, and weight reports using internal and external (vendor and client) information.
  • Track weight growth and monitor distribution trends to ensure compliance with weight budgets and design requirements.
  • Support inclining experiment planning and execution by providing data, calculations, and documentation.
  • Contribute to weight and stability analysis by preparing input data for hydrostatic and stability models.
  • Assist in preparing weight reports and documentation for submission to regulatory bodies, classification societies, and customers.
  • Identify potential weight risks and report findings to senior engineers for resolution. Recommend corrections for adverse weight and moment trends.
