Position Overview
The Connolly Alexander Institute for Data Science (CAIDS) seeks to hire a Professor of Practice in Data, who will teach introductory and multidisciplinary courses in data literacy, presentation, management, and/or analysis. CAIDS promotes, teaches, and supports data literacy and data science for students, faculty, and the community. CAIDS programming includes courses, workshops, events, student internship and co-curricular experiences, research grants, interdisciplinary research groups, and statistical consulting.

Balance a teaching load of two courses per semester (i.e., a 2/2). The core teaching obligation is the DATA 1010 “Introduction to Data” course, designed to be accessible to students of all backgrounds and abilities, focusing on fundamental skills in data literacy, analysis, communication, and ethics. Additionally, develop and teach one or two multidisciplinary courses in data analysis, presentation, ethics, or management in areas of expertise.
Service& Outreach
Serve the CAIDS mission by enhancing participation of faculty and students across existing and new programs while maintaining inclusivity. Possible areas of service may include:
- Developing and coordinating internal and external internship programs
- Coordinating research assistant programs
- Grant coordination and management
- Designing and facilitating workshops and data‑thons
- Advising student groups
- Fostering partnerships with community and K‑12 outreach organizations
- Overseeing annual programming such as the annual data theme and Love Data Week
- Supporting interdisciplinary research groups in relevant areas
Help direct and manage the focus and trajectory of CAIDS as an active and key partner, ensuring continued outreach and educational effectiveness across the campus.
Research & ScholarshipConducting research is not a requirement for this position. However, data‑related research or scholarship on data science teaching and learning may be integrated into the workload, a departure from most other Professor of Practice roles which do not provide time for research.
Employment TermsThis is a permanent position with contracts renewed every three or five years, based on evaluation of teaching, service, and (if part of the negotiated workload) research.
