Position: Full-time Lecturer/Instructor in French
Location: New Orleans

Job Summary

The Department of Languages at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a one‑year full‑time Lecturer/Instructor position in French beginning August 10, 2026. The candidate will have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in French language or literature, experience teaching French at all levels, and native or near‑native fluency in French. Candidates with a doctorate in French language or literature are also encouraged to apply.

A degree at the time of application or official notification of completion of the master’s or doctoral degree is required by August 1, 2026.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduate students. Teaching responsibilities include 4 different 3‑credit courses in French at all levels per academic semester. Courses offered as part of the curriculum are available on the Department of Languages website.

Department Overview

The Xavier Department of Languages offers minors and concentrations in Chinese, French, and Spanish, as well as majors in French and Spanish and a Spanish for Health Professionals Certificate. Professors use the communicative approach and the inclusion of cultural content from the African Diaspora in French and Spanish. In recent years, students have studied abroad with Xavier faculty in Costa Rica and Taiwan and would welcome a faculty‑led program to a Francophone destination.

Responsibilities
  • Teach four different in‑person courses in French per semester.
  • Demonstrate strong potential for excellence in teaching, mentoring, and recruiting undergraduate students.
  • Serve as mentor and advisor for students completing concentrations, minors, and majors in French.
  • Participate in service to the Department of Languages through advising and faculty meetings.
  • Contribute to a growth plan for enrollments in French at Xavier.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in French language or literature.
  • Fluency in English (write and speak).
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Earned Doctorate in French language or literature.
    • Successful experience in undergraduate teaching.
    • Experience teaching a diverse student body and knowledge of effective strategies (e.g., culturally responsive or inclusive pedagogy, awareness of issues that may affect the success of minoritized students).
    • Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area.
    • Experience teaching Afro Francophone culture in French at all levels.
    • Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana.
