Summary
The Office of Study Abroad (OSA) at Tulane University is housed in the Center for Global Education, a unit of Newcomb-Tulane (undergraduate) College. The OSA is responsible for the management and oversight of summer, semester, and yearlong study abroad options for students pursuing degrees in the Schools of Liberal Arts, Science & Engineering, Architecture, and Public Health. These options include programs administered in‑house, such as direct enrollment, exchange, and faculty‑led programs, as well as those administered by third‑party providers or consort arrangements.
The Study Abroad Advisor works closely with Tulane faculty and academic advisors, international partners, and program providers to provide initial and ongoing advising and administrative assistance in support of study abroad opportunities for Tulane undergraduates. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director for Study Abroad Advising. This position collaborates closely with all CGE colleagues in appropriately routing and responding to student requests for information and assistance.
This position pursues this work in alignment with the overall mission of the Center for Global Education and its learning goals for study abroad.
The Study Abroad Advisor’s primary responsibilities include: counseling students about Tulane‑approved study abroad programs; guiding students through the application and pre‑departure process; planning and supervising outreach activities and orientations for prospective and returned students; supervising peer advisors; developing digital advising material; engaging with returned study abroad alumni through re‑entry workshops and webinars; and proactively networking with departments on campus to promote global education.
Potential service as an on‑site coordinator for summer programs abroad may be requested and some foreign and domestic travel is required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all work performed.
- Ability to work cooperatively/effectively with others of diverse personalities, education, and cultural background.
- Ability to self‑motivate and self‑regulate work projects.
- Ability to use digital media as an advising and marketing platform.
- Ability to travel internationally for site visits and program coordination.
- Bachelor’s Degree in International Education, International Studies, or a related field.
- 2 years of related experience.
- Master’s Degree in International Education, International Studies, or a related field.
- Experience studying, working, or living abroad.
- Experience working in an academic environment in the US and abroad.
- Experience using various social media, Terra Dotta, and other software tools useful for tracking and communicating with students about study abroad activities.
- Proficiency in at least one language other than English.
