Description

The Paraprofessional is an integral member of the Exceptional Student Services (ESS) team. The Paraprofessional is responsible for the academic and behavioral support of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEP) in the general education classroom and resource setting. Paraprofessionals provide moderate to intense support for students with academic and behavioral needs as aligned to their IEP goals.

Description

The Paraprofessional is an integral member of the Exceptional Student Services (ESS) team. The Paraprofessional is responsible for the academic and behavioral support of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEP) in the general education classroom and resource setting. Paraprofessionals provide moderate to intense support for students with academic and behavioral needs as aligned to their IEP goals.

Role And Responsibilities

Paraprofessional duties may include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

Instruction

  • Providing goal oriented instructional support to the student according to IEP and as directed by special education and general education teachers
  • Modifying instructional strategies based on recommendations and evaluations.
  • Using a variety of materials and instructional techniques when appropriate.
  • Collaborating with ESS team members to provide feedback and data related to student’s progress.
Behavioral

  • Supporting the students’ behavioral needs in the general education and resource setting by implementing the strategies and techniques outlined in the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
  • Monitoring progress by tracking data aligned to BIPs.
  • Facilitating social interactions between the child and other children in the classroom.
  • Supporting students and teachers in Positive Behavior Intervention and Support.
  • Supervising student (duty) as requested.
  • Providing escorts and assistance to students as needed.
  • Receiving training in CPI, as requested
  • Taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials and facilities.
Other Duties

  • Effectively communicating with school administrators, teachers, student service personnel, and parents regarding student performance and plans for improvement
  • Participating in faculty meetings and professional learning communities meetings
  • Attending Professional Development sessions
  • Producing performance-based activities to support school initiatives
  • Facilitating student inclusion in class or school programs, or other special events
  • Maintaining an inventory, controlling the storage and use of department property, and overseeing the working condition of said equipment.
  • The Paraprofessional will be called upon to assist in all areas of school life as needed.
The salary range for this position is between $25,000 and $40,000 depending on experience and qualifications.Most Candidates will be in the range of $27,000 and $32,000.

Requirements

Expectations, Educational Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree or two years of college
  • Experience working with students with a wide variety of academic and behavioral needs
  • Written and oral proficiency in English
  • Modeling and applying non-discriminatory practices in all activities
  • Flexibility and a team-spirit work ethic
  • Well developed interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidential files and information
  • Organizational, communication and problem-solving skills
  • Dependable and punctual


Preferred Qualifications

  • Paraprofessional Certification
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Experience in an elementary, urban school setting
  • Experience in phonics instruction or reading intervention
  • Proficiency in French
  • Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) training
  • Knowledge of the Louisiana system of education and the French system of education
