Overview

A banner enterprise of the Tulane Department of Neurology is the Healthy Brain Aging Initiative (HBAI). Located at University Medical Center of New Orleans (UMCNO), the HBAI includes a dedicated team of neurologists, neuropsychologists/psychometrists, advanced practice providers, social workers, and neuroscientists, aiming to promote healthy brain aging through its Center for Alzheimer’s Prevention, its Center for Memory Disorders, and its Center for Parkinson’s Disease.

Through their partnership with LCMC Health, Tulane and LSU Neurology faculty are collaborating to build the region’s only multi-institutional healthy brain aging initiative, and the largest and most comprehensive program in the Gulf South region.

UMCNO is a 446-bed, non-profit, public, research and academic hospital located in New Orleans, Louisiana, providing tertiary and level I trauma care for the region. The hospital is operated by LCMC Health and is the largest hospital in the system. UMCNO is affiliated with Tulane University School of Medicine and LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, as well as several other healthcare degree-conferring institutions in the region.

This is a clinical, teaching, and research position. It is estimated that the Cognitive Neurologist will dedicate 70% effort to clinical practice (outpatient based) and 30% effort to scholarly activities, including creating and directing an accredited cognitive neurology fellowship, though the FTE distributions may vary slightly over time as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Caring for neurology outpatients with neurocognitive disorders, including subjective cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body disease, frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, posterior cortical atrophy, and related disorders)
  • Creating and directing an accredited cognitive neurology fellowship
  • Teaching of medical students and residents as assigned
  • Participation in industry sponsored and investigator initiated clinical trials research according to interest and as opportunities arise
  • Serving on institutional and departmental committees, actively participating in departmental conferences such as Neurology Grand Rounds, Morbidity & Mortality Conference, and faculty meetings
  • Additional optional roles may include supervision of neurology residents clinics, or serving as attending on the inpatient neurology consult service (excluding stroke and neurocritical care patients), according to the interests of the applicant and the department’s needs
