Resident Construction Engineer Intern

Job Description

The Grimes Construction Office is looking to hire Construction Interns/Co‑ops for the 2026 construction season. Interns/Co‑ops will conduct inspection duties on highway construction projects within the Des Moines Metro to ensure construction work is done in accordance with Iowa DOT plans, specifications, and standards. Types of construction projects may include grading, asphalt and concrete paving, bridges and culverts or pavement maintenance projects.

Interns will be trained and certified by the Iowa DOT in materials testing procedures.

• Inspect small to moderately complex construction projects such as grading and paving, bridge culverts, erosion control, fencing, guardrail, and/or weatherization projects for compliance.
• Review field construction reports and material certifications, verify quantities and materials, ensure compliance with specifications and the use of certified materials, and prepare vouchers and progress reports.
• Document construction progress and activities by maintaining detailed project records including item progress, materials used, and test results.
• Perform a variety of standard tests to ensure quality control (e.g., air and slump tests on concrete) and record test results.
• Review traffic control set‑ups on highway construction projects for safety and compliance.

Summer Only:
May–August 2026

  40 hours/week and overtime may vary
• Positions Available: 2 (either summer engineering intern or co‑op)

• Eligible majors:
  Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology.
• Completion of at least two years in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering, or in an engineering management curriculum at an accredited four‑year college or university with eligibility for junior status upon return to school.
