Our client is seeking to add an experienced Estimator to their office at one of their other locations in Iowa City, Waterloo, Fort Dodge, Ames, or Spencer, IA. The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and detailed estimates of probable costs for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontracted work for construction projects. Estimates are developed based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings, and project specifications.
This role provides estimating support to all five offices and plays a key role throughout the preconstruction process.
What you will be doing...
- Prepare accurate and thorough estimates for new construction projects.
- Review and analyze project specifications, drawings, and related documents to fully understand project scope.
- Identify, quantify, and evaluate project requirements, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor services.
- Develop detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, overhead, and general conditions to determine total project costs.
- Utilize cost databases, historical data, and industry benchmarks to improve estimate accuracy.
- Perform detailed quantity take-offs for all construction systems.
- Solicit, review, and analyze pricing from suppliers, subcontractors, and service providers.
- Negotiate pricing and contract terms with vendors and subcontractors to ensure competitive and cost-effective solutions.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, architects, engineers, clients, and internal stakeholders to clarify project requirements and assumptions.
- Present clear, concise, and well-supported cost estimates to assist leadership and clients with decision-making.
- Use construction estimating software and related tools to streamline and enhance the estimating process.
- Include and collaborate with the Field Operations Manager, Safety Specialist, and/or anticipated Superintendent as appropriate throughout the estimating process.
- Support the development, architectural, and construction teams with preconstruction expertise, including value design, cost analysis, scheduling input, procurement strategies, and pursuit support.
- Assist the preconstruction team by developing and delivering current and accurate conceptual estimates.
- Support customer relationship development with owners by balancing our client’s business objectives with owner expectations related to schedule, quality, and cost.
- Lead the project team through the estimating process while ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
Skills you bring to the table...
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of construction estimating experience required.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- Proven experience communicating with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure complete scope coverage.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to objectively coach and guide team members through complex issues.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Experience with Sage Timberline is a plus.
