The Oncology Infusion Nurse Practitioner provides advanced clinical care to patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and supportive infusions. This role supports a high‑acuity outpatient infusion center within a community medical center and integrates direct patient care, symptom management, clinical leadership, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The NP contributes to evidence‑based oncology practice and may participate in clinical research activities.
Key Responsibilities- Perform comprehensive assessments after infusion treatments of high-risk patients who have treatment associated reactions
- Manage acute infusion reactions and treatment‑related toxicities using established protocols
- Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests for patient safety of receiving drug
- Prescribe medications and supportive therapies within scope of practice
- Conduct follow‑up visits for toxicity checks, urgent symptom evaluations, and treatment clearance
- Oversee safe administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologics, blood products, and supportive infusions in collaboration with infusion nursing staff
- Provide real‑time clinical support for symptom triage and escalation of care
- Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal safety standards for handling hazardous drugs
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, expected side effects, and symptom‑management strategies
- Provide anticipatory guidance to support patients throughout complex cancer therapies
- Work closely with medical oncologists, pharmacists, infusion nurses, social workers, and other team members to coordinate comprehensive care
- Participate in tumor boards, care‑planning meetings, and quality‑improvement initiatives
- Support clinical trials by assessing eligibility, monitoring adverse events, and documenting research‑related data when applicable
- Maintain current knowledge of emerging therapies and evidence‑based oncology practices
- Contribute to workflow optimization and patient‑safety initiatives within the infusion center
- Mentor nursing staff and participate in the education of students and trainees
- Assist in developing clinical protocols and practice guidelines
- Follow institutional policies, clinical pathways, and national oncology guidelines (NCCN, ASCO, ONS)
- Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
- Current RN and NP licensure in state of practice
- DEA registration and prescriptive authority
- National certification as an Adult, Family, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- 2 years of Outpatient Medical Oncology experience as a Nurse Practitioner
- ONS/ONCC chemotherapy and biotherapy certification (or obtained shortly after hire)
- Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP) (obtained within one year of hire)
- Experience in an oncology infusion or outpatient oncology setting
- Experience in an academic or research‑driven environment
- Strong skills in symptom management and urgent oncology care
- Proficiency in oncology pharmacology and infusion therapy
- Ability to manage complex and acutely ill patients
- Strong communication and patience skills
- Collaborative, team‑oriented approach
- Commitment to evidence‑based practice and continuous learning
