$37.85/hr - $44.14/hr

This position will operate within the Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) program within the Greater Los Angeles - CA (GLA) VA Health Care System. It is a Supervisory Motor Vehicle Operator position providing transportation to veterans and their spouses who live in suburban areas of the GLA VA Health Care System and surrounding satellite clinic catchment areas. The driver is required to maintain a current California Department of Transportation CDL License OT) Class "C" with Passenger P endorsement.

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must demonstrate evidence of training or experience that shows you have the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position. Evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be evaluated against the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

The screening phase evaluates whether applicants meet the minimal acceptable qualification before considering them for further rating. Eligible applicants are then rated against the remainder of the job elements:

Physical Requirements /

Working Conditions:

The Motor Vehicle Operator must be in good physical condition for driving and related services, especially when driving for extended periods and across various traffic and weather conditions. The operator must be vigilant and alert to cope with adverse conditions, manage heavy loads, maneuver large numbers of patients, assist patients into and out of the vehicle, and handle wheelchair patients. Physical effort ranges from light to moderate and may involve changing tires, making limited emergency repairs, and ensuring safety on heavy urban to rural traffic.

• Driver is required to maintain a current California Department of Transportation CDL License.
• Major duties include, but are not limited to:
  As the Motor Vehicle Operator Supervisor to the Transportation Section, the incumbent establishes internal procedures and maintains and plans work assignments and practices of the section with guidelines of policy, regulations, and sound motor vehicle operations practice.
• Reviews work in progress to assess the quality and quantity of work produced.
• Shall determine which employees will be assigned to various tasks, including the training of new employees.
• Keeps employees informed relative to current policies, practices, and procedures along with management intent.
• Plan, schedule and assign tasks to ensure consistent coverage of all administrative duties.
• Approves/disapproves sick and annual leave consistent with current practice and policies.
• Provides on-the-job training for employees and provides backup skills by cross training.
• Recommends promotions, reassignments, awards, or other status changes of assigned personnel.
• Performs driving duties and related services operating various types of and classes of motor vehicles including buses, trucks, vans, patient transport vehicles such as ambulances and wheelchair buses, passenger and shuttle vans.
• Provides non-emergent, safe, reliable transportation of eligible veterans and cargo.
• Operates and provides preventive maintenance checks and services for patient transport vehicles.
• Interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day.
• Provides metrics to the VTS Mobility Manager of veterans who arrived at the GLA VA Health Care system via the VTS transportation vehicles.
• Responsible to ensure only eligible veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center or satellite clinic and returned to their respective pick‑up locations.
• Required to verify passengers against manifest and complete such paperwork as trip tickets and records indicating the amount and type of fuel dispensed.
