Position: Sr. Manager, Software Development, Amazon Leo for Government (ALG)

Sr. Manager, Software Development, Amazon Leo for Government (ALG)

Amazon Leo (previously known as Project Kuiper) is an ecosystem with a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low‑latency, high‑speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities. Amazon Leo for Government (ALG) develops secure, high‑performance satellite communications technologies that support U.S. national and international security and defense.

We are looking for an exceptional engineering leader to join us as a Senior Manager, leading the software architecture, design, implementation, and integration of ALG‑developed device endpoints. These devices enable Government customers’ required RF, Optical, and Network‑layer connectivity with the Amazon Leo system and integrate with ground solutions, network solutions, ALG business and operational support systems.

This role is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining foundational software that extends Amazon Leo capabilities to U.S. Government customers such as NASA, DoD, other National Security customers, and international government customers. You will own developing and delivering brand‑new software for mission‑critical space safety and sustainability applications that coordinate with external systems and organizations rapidly, reliably, and at scale.

You’ll work in a fast‑paced, high‑impact environment, tackling complex challenges in secure satellite communications. You’ll collaborate closely with hardware, security, systems, and product teams to develop scalable, real‑time solutions tailored for Government customers.

You will own the roadmap and mission for software and work with your customers to refine requirements, understand constraints, hire & grow your team, and iteratively deliver value to our customers.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Lead multiple teams (manager of managers) of firmware, embedded systems, and services software engineers.
  • Manage and develop employees, including hiring, retention, performance management, mentoring, and capability/skill development.
  • Work with peer teams and customers to design suitable software systems and interfaces to fulfill government customer use cases.
  • Collaborate with peer teams to integrate various system elements, both hardware and software.

This role is based in Redmond, WA, or Northridge, CA, with U.S. relocation benefits available. Due to the sensitive nature of the ALG projects, onsite work is required five days a week.

This position requires that the candidate be a U.S. citizen in order to comply with U.S. government‑imposed requirements related to the nature of the work and/or where it will be performed.

Basic Qualifications
  • 10+ years of engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of engineering team management experience.
  • 10+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects, and development teams in an Agile environment.
  • 10+ years of embedded software development experience with proven expertise in mission‑critical systems development, specifically satellite or ground‑based communication/networking systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience partnering with product and program management teams.
  • Experience in networking/Wireless Communication Systems or RF engineering.
  • Experience leading teams in aerospace or other safety‑critical industries.
  • Experience establishing metrics for measurement of engineering and operational excellence.
