Position: MAINTENANCE AND CONSTRUCTION HELPER 3115 (B)

Overview

A Maintenance and Construction Helper does a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks in construction, maintenance and repair activities.

Annual Salary

$51,072 to $72,641 and $53,473 to $78,174. The salary in the Department of Water and Power is $73,622 to $91,475 and $102,249 (flat-rated).

  • Candidates from the eligible list are normally appointed to vacancies in the lower pay grade positions.

  • Qualifications and Eligibility
  • Six months as a Utility Pre-Craft Trainee with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power;
    or
  • One year of full-time paid experience in construction, craft or landscaping work;
    or
  • One year of full-time paid experience in construction, craft or landscaping work while in the United States Armed Forces.
  • Process Notes
    • Applicants who have at least six months of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination; appointment will occur only after meeting the one-year requirement.
    • Active United States Military personnel may file; appointment after military service completed and with satisfactory performance.
    • Requirement #3 applicants must attach DD-214 or military  EAOS date at filing time; attachments after submission will not be credited.
    • EPA Technician Certificate may be required for some positions prior to appointment.
    • Some roles require a valid Class C driver’s license; certain assignments require Class B license. See notes for licensing verification and pre-probation submission of driving history where applicable.
    • Internal use:
      Licensing verification for Class C at appointment;
      Class B before end of probation.
    • Some positions may require working in hazardous locations and annual medical examinations.

    Examination

    Weight: 100% Multiple-Choice Test

    The online test may evaluate Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Attention to Detail, Interpersonal Skills, Teamwork, Safety Focus, Job Knowledge and related abilities. Testing details and link to competencies are available online.

    The test will be proctored online. Eligible candidates will receive an email with dates and steps to take the test. Candidates failing to complete the test by the deadline will not be considered.
