Overview
The Dual Coating & Welding Inspector must assure proper welding procedures are qualified and utilized, radiographers are certified, welders are qualified, sound welds are produced, and proper documentation is maintained to include MTRs, detailed as-builts and weld mapping. Also provide inspection of contractor's quality of work in accordance with the client's policies and procedures as it relates to coating of steel pipe and fittings on pipeline construction projects.
Responsibilities- Be familiar with the approved construction drawings and Company specifications.
- Understand the Contract document as it relates to duties on the project.
- Have a basic understanding of welding techniques, welding positions, welding consumables, weld preparation and welding drawing requirements. Maintain a detailed inspector's logbook.
- Complete and submit applicable inspection reports that accurately describe the work performed on the project in a manner such that the welds inspected may be identified per current standards.
- Take a proactive approach to safety on the job site and report safety issues to the Construction Manager, Chief Inspector and Safety Inspector.
- Plan and organize inspection duties in advance.
- Assure any design changes or material substitutions are discussed with the Construction Manager, Chief Inspector and proper Company approval is obtained.
- Verify all materials used in the installation are in compliance with Company requirements.
- Keep the Chief Inspector aware of any daily problems or anticipated problems with the project.
- Possess an understanding of the relationship between quality assurance, quality control and inspection procedures.
- Assure a welding procedure is established and each welder is qualified for the work being performed.
- Monitor the quality of the welds being made to ensure sound welds at all joints.
- Assure repairs made to correct defects in a pipe weld are sufficient and meet the applicable codes and Company specifications.
- Assure all welding materials are of proper type and quality, stored according to manufacturers' specifications, and not damaged.
- Weld Inspector may be assigned additional duties and responsibilities relating to pipeline construction inspection observation and documentation.
- Inspect Other Contractors' work for compliance with permit requirements and one-call requirements. Communicate deviations to Chief Inspector and Company with formal written documentation the same day.
- Verify Other Contractors have necessary equipment, safety measures, records, project designs, drawings, GIS, etc. to avoid damaging gas mains, services and other utilities.
- Verify Other Contractors have located all gas lines and have all utilities marked; gas facilities must be painted and flagged per local requirements.
- Field verify that construction equipment use and material installation are captured on the Daily Progress Report for inventory and billing; inspect material waste to reduce loss and communicate opportunities to reduce waste.
- Verify Other Contractors follow Company procedures and coating manufacturers' instructions for applying field coatings to pipe, fittings, valves, joints, and other components.
- Verify, prior to use, that all materials for testing are properly constructed, rated, and have manufacturer documentation.
- Complete and submit Daily Inspection Report forms including safety, coating inspection, trenching/backfill, and other requested forms.
- Review and verify that Other Contractors' HOD path is acceptable.
- Witness all HOD pull-throughs to verify proper support, coating protection, and accurate as-built information; inspect leading edge for coating damage during pull-back.
- Verify polymers and additives used in drilling fluids are approved by Company; provided additives list applies.
- Verify pull force does not exceed design.
- Witness hydrostatic testing and verify calibration papers are attached to the test report.
- Verify other Contractors properly clean and dry pipelines prior to commissioning.
- Witness and verify that pipeline inspection for deformation is conducted and results are free of irregularities.
- Field validate that environmental BMPs are followed by Other Contractors per permits and construction plans.
- Before backfills, HOD pull-throughs, or jack and bores: visually inspect pipe coating, gouges, dents, and ensure coating repairs are complete; verify field-applied coatings meet mil thickness and hardness specs; inspect shrink sleeves or similar products; coordinate with survey crews for accurate as-built data; ensure proper padding and bedding and safe rigging/lowering; after HDDs, verify coatings were not damaged during pull-through.
- Knowledge and experience pertaining to the skillset required to build/install natural gas transmission pipeline facilities.
- Required 3-5+ years of pipeline construction and/or inspection experience (combination of experience is acceptable).
