Job InformationDEPARTMENT OR SCHOOL SITE: The Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) was established in August 1948 to create a safe and tranquil environment for the students, teachers and staff of the Los Angeles Unified School District. LASPD provides police services district-wide with 24/7 operational jurisdiction over 710 square miles.

Desirable QualificationsAn ideal School Safety Officer is vigilant, responsible for campus and public safety, and maintains a visible presence across school buildings and grounds. They proactively identify, report, and help prevent safety hazards, unauthorized access, and potential emergencies. They communicate clearly and work with school staff, parents, and public safety partners. They are reliable team players who support students and maintain campus safety and order.
Minimum RequirementsEducation: Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
Experience: Six months of experience as a guard or peace officer is preferable. Courses in criminal justice or police administration are preferable.
Special: A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California. Appointment is subject to fingerprinting, a review of conviction record, and a thorough background investigation. Completion of a State-approved School Security Certificate Program is required by the end of the probationary period.

Physical Requirements:
Walk and stand for the assigned period; normal hearing in normal voice-range frequencies; agility and strength to protect self from attack.

Vacation: Full-time employees earn up to two weeks of paid vacation to start. Three weeks after five years of year-round paid service.

Job Duties / ResponsibilitiesA School Safety Officer performs non-sworn duties including protecting District property, assisting District personnel in observance of rules and procedures by students and others, and participating in community-based policing. The typical duties are:
- Guarding a school or other District property and protecting property and staff by making prescribed rounds of inspection.
- Patrolling school corridors, locker rooms, restrooms, assembly and athletic facilities, gymnasiums, bus-loading areas, and other campus locations to observe student behavior and prevent violations or unsafe activities.
- Preventing entry or reporting the presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings in violation of laws and ordinances affecting the District.
- Reporting fire hazards and extinguishing small blazes; identifying non-working alarms.
- Investigating unusual conditions, notifying proper persons or agencies, and taking immediate emergency action when leaks or malfunctions in plumbing, electrical, heating, or other equipment are detected to reduce danger and prevent damage.
- Assisting school administrators in contacting parents regarding students with behavior problems and discussing campus security with parent and community groups.
