The RoleThe Research Toxicologist I supports the evaluation of human and environmental safety of ingredients and finished consumer products to ensure compliance with The Honest Company s Standards, global regulatory requirements, and the highest level of consumer health protection.
This role partners closely with cross-functional teams—including R&D, Product Development, Regulatory, Legal, Quality, and external suppliers—to assess ingredient and formula safety, communicate hazard and risk-based decisions, and support the execution of toxicology testing and safety documentation across Honest s product portfolio.
Key Responsibilities- Research and evaluate new and existing ingredients and formulations against The Honest Standard, internal restricted substance lists, and global regulatory and safety frameworks.
- Conduct core toxicological assessments including:
Hazard identification, Dose–response assessment, Exposure scenario characterization, Risk characterization for ingredients, impurities, and finished products - Propose risk management measures as needed (e.g., use restrictions, cautionary labeling, formulation changes).
- Identify higher-risk ingredients, formulations, or raw material substitutions and collaborate with product teams to troubleshoot safer alternatives aligned with product category and use conditions.
- Manage relationships with suppliers, CROs, and third-party laboratories to ensure timely execution and delivery of documents and services.
- Facilitate the completion and maintenance of toxicology deliverables, including:
- Toxicological Risk Assessments of products (TRAs)
- Raw material human safety risk assessments
- Prop 65 exposure based risk assessments
- Safety substantiation memos and scientific justifications
- Coordinate SDS development and updates with external vendors.
- Coordinate in vitro and clinical safety testing as needed to support product launches and claims.
- Assist with third-party certifications and verifications (e.g., EWG), including data collection and scientific justification.
- Communicate ingredient and formula safety updates, decisions, and rationale clearly to cross-functional partners.
- Contribute to internal documentation, decision logs, and safety summaries to support transparency and alignment.
Required
- Master s degree in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Environmental Health, or a related scientific discipline
