Clinical Instructor of Medicine (Practitioner) Medical Oncology
The Department of Medicine, Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, seeks outstanding Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to coordinate the care of patients enrolled in clinical trials in the Division of Medical Oncology. The main function is to perform initial assessment and informed consent, physical examinations, counsel patients and families, monitor progress, and work with research coordinators and physicians.
Successful candidates will have strong clinical skills, an interest in serving a diverse patient population, and an interest in clinical research. This is a clinical instructor position with a competitive salary and benefits. Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Conduct in-depth patient and family interviews; construct medical histories; perform initial and ongoing physical examinations; address health needs and disease management; manage treatment of hospitalized or clinic patients.
- Directly perform or order diagnostic studies and interpret results.
- Contribute to the implementation of clinical trial protocols and the clinical management of patients on clinical trials.
- Collaborate with other providers to identify potential clinical trial candidates and obtain informed consent when appropriate.
- Perform clinical assessments required by the clinical trial protocol in coordination with the study coordinator and team.
- Develop and implement long- and short-range treatment plans.
- Perform procedures such as obtaining specimens, administering injections, and drawing labs.
- Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments.
- Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
- Identify and document patient progress, update and summarize charts, adjust orders as needed, and notify the physician of changes in condition.
- Develop, review, and initiate treatment plan orders.
- Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical problems, psychological issues, and use of prescribed treatments and medications.
- Serve as liaison with governmental agencies and assist with medical research projects following protocols; obtain IRB approval for treatment protocols.
- Refer patients to appropriate community resources and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in in-service education and professional associations; perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Field of Expertise:
For NP candidates, possession of a current Nurse Practitioner certificate; current and valid California State RN and Nurse Practitioner licenses; and Basic Life Support certification. Clinical nursing experience.
The NP or PA will be located in USC’s Orange County locations (Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, or nearby) and may travel to USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center as needed.
