The Pre and Post Surgical Services Float Pool Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process (assess, plan, implement and evaluate) to provide safe, quality care to perioperative patients. He/she works collaboratively with nursing staff, medical staff and all members of the health‑care team, demonstrating professionalism through communication, education and participation as a team member. The role is supervised by the RN Clinical Coordinator and/or Clinical Director of Perioperative Services.
The RN floats to different Pre and Post Surgical Services areas within Keck Medical Center of USC (Surgery, Same Day Surgery, Keck 4th Floor PACU, Keck 3 South PACU, Endoscopy, HC2 Endoscopy Center, HC3, HC4/OPSC, etc.) and USC Norris Cancer Hospital (Endoscopy, Norris Pre/Post, Surgery, etc.) as needed.
- The PACU RN manages a variety of complex patient populations by utilizing methodical and evidence‑based scientific practice standards, maintaining physiological and behavioral functions, and providing psychological and sociological support to patients and families during recovery.
- Consistently transfers scientific knowledge in applying the nursing process.
- Formulates care plans for direct and indirect care.
- Performs skills essential to nursing action.
- Explains health treatment and teaches clients and families.
- Delegates tasks to others based on scope of practice, preparation, and capability.
- Evaluates effectiveness of care and modifies plan, observes modifications and interprets information.
- Act as patient advocate by initiating action to advance the plan of care.
- Initiates and supports change decisions.
- Participates in professional practice development (nursing committees, research, policy development/review, unit‑based improvement projects).
- Demonstrates knowledge about current policies and shares awareness of new trends/technology.
- Provides appropriate age‑specific care to patients.
- Utilizes the six core steps (data collection, assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation, and patient teaching) to manage the patient’s condition.
- Collaborates with surgeons, co‑workers and ancillary staff while providing direct care to the PACU patient.
- Utilizes policies and procedures to support the RN’s scope of practice.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining performance improvement and quality control activities to support the department and hospital.
- Assists in providing orientation, training and continuing education for staff.
- Adheres to governing regulations such as hospital policies, Title 22 and JCAHO.
- Is competent in utilizing Cerner Millennium to place physician orders.
- Is a team player and possesses a positive attitude.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN).
- 1 year of experience in PACU.
- 1 year of experience in a high‑acuity Intensive Care setting.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak, read and write English proficiently.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, and the ability to understand, follow and successfully perform duties including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures, in accordance with administrative and clinical policies, regulations and procedures.
- Commitment to excellence in patient care and customer service.
- Registered Nurse – RN (California Board of Registered Nursing).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training (Los Angeles City) – must be obtained within 30 days of hire if not already available.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association.
- Critical Care Nursing Certificate – CCRN (AACN) or CPAN preferred.
The hourly rate range for this position is $44.00 – $95.00.
