The Opportunity

We are pursuing qualified candidates to fill Clinical Licensed Vocational Nurse I positions within the Department of Mental Health. The position provides nursing assistance to physicians in a community health or hospital clinic or a Probation Department dispensary or infirmary.

About This Position

Positions allocable to this class are responsible for providing assistance to physicians conducting diagnostic physical examinations and performing medical treatments by readying patients and examining rooms, making vital sign observations, administering ordered medications and treatments, and reinforcing the physicians’ instructions to the patients. Duties performed require application of nursing principles and techniques normally acquired through the completion of vocational nurse training.

Work is performed under the direction of a physician or the immediate supervision of a registered nurse and follows their specific instructions and the established nursing procedures for the particular clinic, dispensary, or infirmary. The work of positions in this class is reviewed in progress and upon completion. Assignments are made to one or more clinics being conducted for screening or for specific diseases or for a variety of illnesses, such as orthopedic, chest, cardiac, or family planning, or to a dispensary or infirmary which provides treatment for minor illnesses.

Additional duties include: reviewing patient records to determine the purpose of the visit; interviewing patients or family members to obtain medical history; preparing the area for the physician by obtaining supplies and arranging charts and results; observing patients for need for immediate referral; taking vital signs; preparing patients for examination and treatment; administering medications and immunizations as ordered; providing patient education about medications and procedures;

performing selected treatments under physician direction; conducting visual examinations for school children and processing school readmission slips; answering telephone calls and providing information about clinic services; administering skin tests and collecting specimens; ordering nursing supplies; and related duties as assigned.

Selection Requirements

A license to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Applicants must meet the above requirement at the time of filing in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.

License(s) Required
  • A copy of a valid and unrestricted license to practice as a Vocational Nurse issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians MUST be attached to the application at the time of filing or email to examsounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days from date of application submission. Applications submitted without the required copy of licensure will be considered incomplete until such information is provided.

    Original license must be presented at the time of appointment.

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Physical Class

Physical Class III – Moderate:
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
