The Clinical Unit Supervisor shall primarily work with acutely ill Medical-Surgical, Telemetry-monitored, Orthopedic, and Neurological patient populations in the acute care setting. The Clinical Unit Supervisor shall supervise licensed (registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses) and non-licensed personnel as assigned in the acute care setting, demonstrate a sense of urgency, and communicate changes in patients’ clinical condition with physicians, Directors/Managers/House Supervisors, and co-workers.
MajorResponsibilities
- Patient Care – 50%:
The Clinical Unit Supervisor performs primary patient care tasks as needed to supplement department staffing and monitors/supervises department staff to ensure the clinical and patient care procedures are performed during the assigned shift.
- Ensure staff completes admission assessment/triage, history and physical on all assigned patients per department/unit policy.
- Ensure staff identifies psychosocial, spiritual, learning, and discharge planning needs.
- Ensure staff has the knowledge and ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and perform reassessments as per policy and patient needs/diagnosis; include age-specific assessments for the unit’s patient population.
- Ensure staff completes transfer assessments within one hour of receiving patients or per unit policy.
- Ensure staff completes assessment and instruction upon discharge per unit policy.
- Ensure staff recognizes and reports abnormal diagnostic data to physicians immediately or as ordered.
- Ensure staff administers medications as ordered.
- Ensure staff demonstrates critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities in coordinating and supervising patient care.
- Ensure staff identifies predictable patient problems and provides appropriate care for MS/Tele/Ortho/Neuro patients according to physician orders and hospital policies.
- Ensure physician’s orders are signed, dated, timed, transcribed correctly and carried out in a timely manner.
- Ensure staff reports and seeks immediate assistance in life-threatening situations by recognizing subtle changes and trends and taking appropriate action.
- Ensure staff follows the Rapid Response Process and participates in Code procedures; follows infection control policies and procedures.
- Ensure staff utilizes and documents nursing interventions and maintains current nursing standards and policies.
- Ensure staff communicates information appropriately and clearly to physicians/directors/managers/charge nurse/co-workers and documents interventions.
- Provide safe and effective patient care prioritizing clinical interventions and care.
- Assist physicians and co-workers with procedures and prepare for procedures as needed.
- Major Responsibilities – Patient Care – 50% (continued):
- Demonstrate safe use of supportive equipment (e.g., walkers, CPMs, wheelchairs) and identify low volume/high risk problems.
- Maintain documentation that reflects current nursing standards and supports policies and procedures.
- Develops, implements and evaluates a nursing plan of care for the patient/family – 10%:
- Identify patient/family support systems and their effectiveness; consult with other departments for an interdisciplinary approach.
- Identify and implement alternative interventions to achieve expected outcomes; involve patient and family in planning.
- Evaluate interventions and revise the plan of care daily as patient needs change; prioritize discharge planning.
- Communicate the plan of care effectively to other staff and the interdisciplinary team.
- Provides education for the patient/family – 10%:
- Assess learning needs and formulate a teaching plan; perform instruction for routine patient populations and involve family as appropriate; use open-ended questions; provide post-discharge instructions and resources.
- Provides education for the patient/family – 10% (continued):
- Teach other staff and family members; evaluate teaching effectiveness and revise as needed; document patient/family responses.
