MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a frontline perioperative registered nurse leader who functions in an expanded role, working in collaboration with the surgeon and health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes and improve efficiency of operations. Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care through the continuum of perioperative care, including preoperative, intraoperative surgeon assistance, and postoperative care for all patient populations.
Functions as an RN first assistant during operative and other invasive procedures, while maintaining the ability to function in additional roles including but not limited to circulating nurse, surgical scrub, and PFC when required. The RNFA does not concurrently function as an assistant and a surgical scrub or circulating RN. Maintains practice in accordance with organizational standardized procedures, scope of practice, credentials, privileges, experience, education and competency verification.
This position requires flexibility of hours. The RNFA role exists to provide opportunity for surgical assistant practice over a period of two years to support achievement of certification requirements for progression to the CRNFA role.
Essential Job Functions:
Participates in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to RN and RNFA activities. Serves as an educator, mentor, consultant, and resource to peers, colleagues, and others in relation to RNFA activities, RN and surgical scrub roles and responsibilities. Demonstrates strong critical thinking skills and ability to guide the practice of others through influence or escalation to department leadership for course correction.
Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as applicable. Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects. Participates in the performance appraisal process. Uses problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members. Maintains regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements required for practice as an RNFA. Consults with physicians and other health care professionals as indicated regarding patient care issues and quality of care issues for the robotic population served.
Provides leadership in nursing excellence, supporting departmental and organizational initiatives such as effective handoff of care and transfer of care, national patient safety initiatives, etc. Delegates tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions. Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
Assists with daily OR schedule as determined by the department management leadership team to attain OR efficiencies maintaining safe patient care. Follow selected surgical patients postoperatively specific to RNFA activities (eg, postoperative rounding, dressing changes) in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Performs duties as first surgical assistant for multiple surgical services lines, including but not limited to robotic surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology, general surgery, gynecology, and ENT surgical procedures in the main OR in accordance with training and licenses.
