The Director of Communications reports directly to the GFBLA Board of Directors (Board) and is responsible for overseeing the Communications Committee as its Chairperson, and will have the primary goal of increasing awareness, reach, and visibility of GFBLA to the LGBTQ and Arts Communities of Los Angeles and Southern California. The Director of Communications utilizes social media and print marketing to successfully promote the band’s upcoming events and fundraisers.
The Director of Communications works with all other Committees, the GFBLA Board, and the Artistic Directors to market and promote their initiatives.
- Promote mission, vision, and core values of GFBLA.
- Compose an annual Marketing Plan that outlines the promotional campaigns for upcoming performances and fundraisers as well as other marketing initiatives for the year. The GFBLA Marketing Plan is complete with tentative deadlines for all initiatives.
- Create new marketing programs that will help promote the goals of the Communications Committee through involvement of GFBLA members.
- Post and maintain content and followers on GFBLA social media platforms.
- Update the GFBLA website on a weekly basis or more frequently if needed.
- Work with other GFBLA Committees, Staff, and the Board of Directors to market and promote their events and objectives.
- Oversee GFBLA Marketing Campaigns for performances, pride events, fundraisers, etc.
- Accurately identify current and potential Members, Audience, and Donors.
- Find new marketing opportunities through event partnerships or new performance opportunities.
- Help increase GFBLA social following and audience attendance through advertising and promotion.
- Create Press Releases for Spring and Fall performances as well as other necessary events.
- Update a current GFBLA informational brochure for promotional distribution.
- Create and maintain policies, procedures, guidelines, procedures, and other process documents relating to Communications for organizational effectiveness, succession planning, and record management and retention.
- Propose and manage an annual budget for the Communications Committee.
- Report to the Board with regular monthly updates. Attend Board meetings as requested.
- Assist in the general promotion of the band by being available for public appearances for ticket campaigns, fund drives, etc., when appropriate. Attend official functions, receptions, etc., for the band. Promote a positive overall public image of the band in the community, the Pride Bands Alliance at large, and beyond.
- Contact members of the media to set up interviews with company representatives.
- Maintain consistent communication with the Board and work with the Board and the Participate in the annual strategic planning meeting with the Board to define and establish strategic goals for the upcoming year.
- Communications Committee to plan and execute the marketing goals for the year.
- Communicate with the band leadership including other Officers and Directors, Marching Band leadership, events coordinator, librarians, production manager, and Section Leaders in a timely and effective manner.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations, or Communications is preferred. Relevant experience in the aforementioned fields is also accepted.
- Awareness of and proficiency with communications technologies and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, You Tube).
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with team members and GFBLA Board of Directors and GFBLA Staff.
- Confidence while addressing the band and outside media to explain and promote initiatives.
- Excellent writing/editing and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to invent and execute new creative means of marketing.
- A collaborative spirit and the willingness to work closely with internal board and staff as well as other organizations, volunteers, and donors.
- Ability to self-start and work independently on many initiatives concurrently.
- Accountability to fellow board members and GFBLA as a whole.
- Ability to successfully communicate with a wide variety of personalities and organizations.
- Understanding of and commitment to positively support sexual orientation, gender identify, and gender expression issues.
