Industrial Custodian

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

The primary responsibility of the Industrial Custodian is to ensure a clean, organized, and well-maintained machine shop environment. The individual in this position will handle routine cleaning of machinery and work areas, perform basic maintenance tasks, manage waste, and assist with inventory organization. This role supports the safe and efficient operation of the machine shop by contributing to equipment upkeep and cleanliness.

Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, able to handle physical tasks, and are committed to maintaining safety standards. Basic machine shop knowledge is helpful but not required, and fluency in English is essential for communication in this high-risk environment.

Cleaning

• Clean wood and metal chips from machines.
• Wipe down machinery and equipment.
• Sweep and mop shop floors occasionally.
• Regularly clean the CNC wood machine and maintain its dust collection system, including removing full bags of chips and disposing of them properly.
• Clean manual machinery such as lathes, Bridgeport mills, and bandsaws.
• Clean CNC tool holders and workstations as instructed.
• Clean and maintain coolant tanks on CNC machinery as needed.
• Clean stock racks and maintain chip barrel inventory.

MAINTENANCE

• Perform routine lower-level maintenance on machinery, such as filling oil canisters, releasing water from air catches, greasing machinery, and performing way lubrication on manual machines.
• Assist with regular upkeep of the machine shop’s equipment and workstations.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

• Move and empty trash barrels around the shop.
• Collect, organize, and manage clean and dirty rags.

ORGANIZING & INVENTORY

• Move boxes and organize shop materials.
• Assist in organizing and consolidating tooling library boxes.
• Help with general tooling inventory and report missing or depleted shop resources.
• Move and relocate finished parts within the shop.

• Fluency in English is required for safety reasons. The machine shop is a high-risk environment, and clear communication is essential to ensure the safety of all employees.
• Basic knowledge of machine shop operations is helpful but not required.
• Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, standing for long periods, and handling heavy objects.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to following safety procedures.
• General machine shop knowledge is a plus but not required.
• Basic understanding of industrial machine safety is a plus.

This position operates in a manufacturing and production floor environment. At times, machines and hand tools may create noise exposure that is within sound level parameters. This role routinely uses standard casting, soldering and polishing equipment and hand tools.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand for prolonged periods of time, frequent sitting, some walking. Employees will be expected to repeat physical motions throughout the shift that may include the use of their feet, legs, arms, wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Employees will operate a variety of equipment and hand tools in a repetitive manner requiring a high degree of manual dexterity and close visual attention. The employee must be able to carry and/or lift up to 50 lbs. if needed.

The pay range for this role is: 19 - 22 USD per hour (Hollywood, CA)
