Hourly Rate:$17.50 per hour ($18.09 beginning July 1, 2025); non-exempt classification

Duration:
Academic Year (Fall/Spring) with the possibility of extension

Work Schedule:
Up to 20 hours/week (no more than 999 hours per calendar year) Schedule developed with the Operations Coordinator

Training Period:

Two months with the possibility of extension

General Statement:

Under the general supervision of the Operations Coordinator, the Operations Assistant provides maintenance support to the University-Student Union (U-SU). The Operations Assistant is responsible for performing varied maintenance tasks and projects for the general upkeep, repair, and maintenance of the U-SU facility.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine tasks in cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and maintaining the U-SU facility;
  • Operates and maintains equipment and supplies;
  • Empties trash receptacles, sweeps, dusts, vacuums, and spot cleans;
  • Cleans restrooms, floors, walls, windows, mirrors, dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork, and restocks supplies;
  • Performs vacuuming, carpet cleaning, floor stripping, waxing, and steam cleaning;
  • Assists with moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment;
  • Performs non-technical repairs and maintenance;
  • Report any unusual occurrences to supervisors;
  • Provides quality customer service to the University community;
  • Provides information about the University-Student Union and the University to the campus community;
  • Greets all guests and directs guests to the appropriate resource;
  • Maintains an awareness of all University-Student Union and University activities and events;
  • Assists staff with projects and events, and may assist staff with leading Maintenance Aides on projects;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled Cal State LA student with a minimum of six undergraduate units and a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0, or graduate student with at least four graduate units and a minimum Cal State LA cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0;
  • Willingness to work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student body and staff;
  • Ability to interact positively and build effective working relationships;
  • Willingness to provide effective customer service promptly and courteously;
  • Ability to respond to walk-in and other inquiries;
  • Proficient oral, written, and listening skills;
  • Strong organizational skills: the ability to prioritize, complete assigned duties, and perform varied tasks;
  • Strong interpersonal and group communication skills in a team environment;
  • Must be self-motivated, able to adapt to changing workloads, and have some independent judgment;
  • Experience using various maintenance equipment, desktop and web-based applications, and office equipment;
  • Ability to lift 70 pounds;
  • Ability to perform tasks involving regular physical activity;
  • knowledgeable of methods, materials, and equipment for custodial work;
  • Knowledgeable of proper use, care, operation, and safety procedures of maintenance tools;
  • Mechanical aptitude and maintenance background preferred;
  • Customer service experience preferred.

A background/live scan (including a criminal record check) must be completed satisfactorily for an employment offer to remain valid. The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
