Description

The Airports Division acts as General Counsel to Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), its officers and employees, and the Board of Airport Commissioners (Board). LAWA is the governing body for Los Angeles International and Van Nuys General Aviation Airports. The Division is currently comprised of twenty (21) attorneys and eleven (11) support staff members. Attorneys in the Division handle a wide variety of litigation and transactional matters.

This representation includes litigation and advice concerning contract and lease disputes, condemnation, employment-sworn and non-sworn, environmental, insurance, land use, noise, nuisance, personal injury, landlord-tenant disputes, First Amendment rights, and federal regulatory (FAA) matters.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Legal Secretary will work with attorneys in the Airports Division and will provide a full range of secretarial and administrative support services related to the preparation of transactional documents: contracts, leases, permits, concession agreements, memoranda, and letters. The responsibilities of this position include generating documents for federal and state court litigation, E-filing court documents and court reservations, processing reports for Board approval, answering phones, scheduling and confirming meetings, maintaining files, record retention, assisting other support staff of the division as needed and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Applicants must be on the Legal Secretary I eligible list. Applicants who are not on the Legal Secretary eligible list

will be contacted and scheduled to complete the spelling test and letter composition exercise.

• This position requires an accurate typist with demonstrated initiative, good telephone presence, organizational

skills, problem solving skill, and excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word.

• Applicants must also pay close attention to detail, meet time deadlines, work with a minimum amount of

supervision, and enjoy working as a team. Reliable attendance and punctuality are mandatory.

• The hours of this position are generally from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, however, some flexibility

may be required.

Desired Qualifications

• At least one year of prior work experience performing clerical or secretarial duties.

• Prior civil litigation experience is preferred.

Probation

Appointment to this exempt position (non-Civil Service) will be subject to a one-year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successfully completing this probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
