Presides over hearings in CDSS and DHCS Program areas, which may include CalWORKs, Cal Fresh, Medi-Cal, IHSS, Scope of Benefits, Resource Family Approval, and Covered California, among others. Handles all types of hearings, including complex or sensitive cases. Interprets and applies federal and state statutes, regulations, and department policies. Rules on objections and subpoena requests, addresses postponement requests, sets continued hearings, and handles other case management issues to maintain proper flow of cases assigned by the Supervising Administrative Law Judge (SALJ).
Submits timely and legally correct final and proposed decisions as delegated, at a rate and quality consistent with State Hearings Division (SHD) standards. Becomes a subject matter expert in CalWORKs, Cal Fresh, and Medi-Cal cases, consulting with other ALJs on points of law and providing referrals to legal sources and prior decisions. May servir as reviewer of proposed decisions submitted by other ALJs, and/or as duty judge who reviews pre-hearing matters (e.g., expedited hearings, bifurcations, subpoena requests, postponements, and reopen requests).
Participates in special projects, including the implementation of best practices, and attends SHD internal and external meetings as assigned.

Travel required but not limited to Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties. This location is accessible by public transit and near restaurants and venues; partial telework offered. Hybrid work may be available under Governor’s Executive Order N-22-25 and at the Department’s discretion. Telework does not change essential functions or CDSS policies. The incumbent must reside in California upon appointment.
Regular commute is not compensable.
