Overview
The U.S. Attorneys Office for the Central District of California (USAO) is one of the most impactful in the nation, serving nearly 20 million people in seven counties. The Civil Division is responsible for representing the federal government and its agencies and employees in civil litigation in the District. This position is located in Los Angeles, CA.
The USAO is divided into three litigating Divisions (Criminal, National Security, and Civil). The Civil Division is divided into five sections:
Complex and Defensive Litigation, Civil Fraud, Civil Rights, Tax and Bankruptcy, and Civil Appeals.
Civil Division AUSAs represent the United States at both the trial and appellate levels. This position is with the Civil Division and involves representing the DOJ in a variety of contexts including court hearings, depositions/interviews, and settlement conferences.
Responsibilities- Hire, train, and deploy exceptional attorneys in the Civil Division to represent the United States at trial and on appeal.
- Represent the United States in civil litigation in the District of California, including involvement with the five Civil Division sections.
- Engage in research and writing to support litigation strategy, and participate in oral advocacy as needed.
- Contribute to a mission-driven environment with a commitment to public service, attention to detail, sound judgment, integrity, and honesty in following Department of Justice and United States Attorney's Office policies.
- Assist with diverse and challenging matters that uphold the rule of law and protect civil rights.
- J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
- You must be a United States Citizen or National.
- Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication (fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing). Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- Must register for Selective Service if applicable.
