Job Description & How to Apply Below
Associate | Election Law (Los Angeles, Orange County, Sacramento or San Francisco)

We are seeking an election law associate with 3-5 years of experience to join our Government Relations & Regulation Group in one of our California offices. Nossaman is a market leader in advising corporations, high-impact nonprofit organizations, lobbying firms, candidates, and elected officials on compliance, regulatory and enforcement matters. This position is primarily focused on California state and local election, campaign finance, lobbying, government ethics and conflict of interest laws.

This role is designed for an associate ready to take on meaningful responsibility and direct client engagement in California-specific regulatory matters. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Contribute substantively to strategic advice, compliance programs, and regulatory matters involving California state and local agencies;
  • Work collaboratively with partners on complex regulatory and enforcement issues;
  • Manage significant matters with competing deadlines; and
  • Exercise sound judgment in advising clients.

The position offers the opportunity to develop long-term client relationships and to grow within a practice that values initiative, leadership and deep subject-matter expertise in California election and ethics law.

Experience interfacing with California regulatory agencies—such as the Fair Political Practices Commission and local ethics agencies—is essential. Qualified candidates will have a strong command of the California Political Reform Act and California local ordinances governing campaign finance, lobbying, ethics and conflicts of interest. Candidates with experience handling California enforcement proceedings, audits or investigations, including preparing responses and negotiating resolutions, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Experience working in California government service, political campaigns or California-based nonprofit organizations is highly valued. Litigation experience in California courts or administrative forums is a plus but not required.

While the core focus of this position is California law, the practice also includes opportunities to work on federal election law matters, particularly those involving independent expenditures and political activity by nonprofit organizations and other entities under the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA). Experience with FEC compliance, advisory opinions, or enforcement matters is a plus, but not required.

The salary range for the position of 3-5-year associate at Nossaman is $205,000 to $230,000 annually. The successful candidate’s salary for this position is reasonably expected to be set within this range; however, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Associates are also eligible for various annual bonuses including a bonus of 15% of base compensation should they meet Nossaman’s 1,850 annual billable hours expectation.

Annual Billable Hours Expectation: 1,850 (which includes up to 100 hours of approved pro-bono work)

Interested candidates are invited to apply online by submitting a resume and law school transcript.
