Production Underwriting Specialist/Senior Specialist – Marine Cargo

This role focuses on underwriting Marine Cargo Risks (Cargo, Stock Throughput, Trip Transit, Project Cargo) within the Western United States. Candidates should be located in California (San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego) or Seattle, WA, and will work a hybrid schedule reporting to the Western Divisional Vice President.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities- Lead the evaluation and underwriting of new and renewal business, ensuring alignment with company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
- Analyze complex risk data to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms.
- Collaborate with actuaries, agents, brokers, and clients to obtain necessary information and provide guidance.
- Procure and analyze supplementary reports and screenings, such as motor vehicle reports, loss history reports, and external inspections, to support underwriting decisions.
- Ensure proper documentation of underwriting decisions and compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.
- Evaluate complex policy renewals and modifications, identifying opportunities for policy enhancements and risk mitigation.
- Communicate underwriting strategies and decisions effectively to internal teams, agents, and brokers.
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions.
- Maintain effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers, focusing on generating new business and retaining profitable business.
- Interpret, explain, and promote products and services to drive market growth.
- Lead the development and execution of comprehensive marketing strategies to promote the company’s products to brokers and agents.
- Analyze market trends and competitive landscape to identify strategic opportunities for product enhancements and innovative marketing approaches.
- Lead marketing initiatives, including presentations, industry events, and broker/agent meetings, to showcase the company’s products and services.
- Monitor and evaluate underwriting and marketing practices, assisting with implementing strategic adjustments to improve overall effectiveness and outcomes.
- May have responsibility for performance and coaching of staff and may participate in decisions regarding talent selection, development, and performance management for direct reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing, Economics, Risk Management and Insurance, or a related field, or equivalent experience. - Experience:
Minimum of 8 years in Marine Cargo Underwriting or a related field. Completion of or progress toward a professional designation such as AU, CPCU, CIC, INS, ARM, or a marketing designation is preferred. - Travel:
Position requires 15‑20% travel.
