We are seeking a Data Engineer
who brings deep experience in health plans and healthcare startups, and who thrives in transforming fragmented, archaic data workflows into reliable, scalable systems. This role sits at the intersection of operations, finance, utilization management, and technology, enabling the organization to measure impact, manage performance, and scale with confidence.
You will not only build data infrastructure, but you will also help define how data works at Blue Zones Health.

The compensation range for this role is $150,000 - $180,000 annually.
What You’ll Do Modern Data Infrastructure for Healthcare Reality- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines that integrate:
- Health plan eligibility and attribution files
- Claims and utilization data
- Enrollment, engagement, and coaching activity data
- Vendor and partner datasets
- Write and optimize SQL to create analytics-ready data models used across the company.
- Normalize and reconcile healthcare data from multiple sources into a single source of truth.
- Partner closely with Operations and Finance to support:
- Provider reporting and contract performance across different contract types
- Unit economics and margin analysis
- Capacity, utilization, and workforce planning
- Revenue recognition and reconciliation
- Translate ambiguous business questions into structured, trustworthy data outputs.
- Replace manual spreadsheets and one-off analyses with automated, auditable pipelines.
- Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies in healthcare data workflows and redesign them for speed and accuracy.
- Introduce modern data engineering practices into environments shaped by:
- Flat files
- Manual handoffs
- Balance pragmatism and innovation—shipping value quickly while building for scale.
- Work across Operations, Technology, Finance, and Clinical teams as a trusted data partner.
- Help non-technical stakeholders understand data constraints, tradeoffs, and opportunities.
- Shape data definitions and metrics that align with how care is actually delivered.
- Mentor and manage junior data engineers or analytics professionals as the team scales.
- Establish best practices for documentation, testing, version control, and data quality.
- Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and team culture within the data function.
- 7+ years of experience in data engineering or analytics engineering roles.
- Strong SQL expertise and experience building production-grade data models.
- Hands-on experience working with health plan or payer data (claims, eligibility, attribution, utilization).
- Experience in startup or high-growth healthcare environments.
- Demonstrated success modernizing or replacing legacy data workflows.
- Experience leading, mentoring, or managing others.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work across technical and non-technical teams.
- Experience supporting value-based care or population health programs.
- Familiarity with healthcare financial models (PMPM, shared savings, unit economics).
- Experience with cloud data warehouses and modern ELT tools.
- Data is trusted, accessible, and actively used across the organization.
- Ops and Finance no longer rely on fragile spreadsheets or manual reconciliations.
- Performance, cost, and outcomes can be measured clearly and confidently.
- Legacy healthcare data workflows are replaced with scalable, automated systems.
- The data function grows with strong foundations and thoughtful leadership.
