We are seeking a dedicated Emergency Financial Representative to join our team in Los Angeles. This role is critical in ensuring reimbursement from patients and responsible parties while helping patients understand their healthcare insurance coverage. You will be responsible for up-front POS collections, securing patient accounts to avoid bad debt, and assisting patients with programs like Medi-Cal and Hospital Presumptive Eligibility.
Note on Orientation: All candidates must be fully available from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM for the initial orientation and training period.
Status: 3-Month Contract (Potential to extend or apply for permanent roles)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in medical front office, medical billing, hospital registration/admitting, and insurance verification.
- Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
- Technical Skills: Typing 45+ WPM; proficiency in MS Office; strong mathematical skills for calculating co-pays and financial estimates.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with Medi-Cal, Medicare, Covered California, COBRA, and IPA requirements. Basic medical terminology.
- Certifications:
* Ability to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Certification within 3 months of hire. - LA City Fire Card required within 2 weeks of employment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Financial Counseling: Secure patient accounts by setting up payment arrangements and performing POS collections at the point of registration.
- Eligibility Assistance: Evaluate and screen patients for programs such as Hospital Presumptive Eligibility (HPE) and Uncompensated Care.
- Registration & Verification: Complete a minimum of 20–30 accurate registrations per shift, including scanning documents and verifying insurance benefits.
- EMTALA Compliance: Ensure all interactions with patients occur only after a medical screening exam has been performed, adhering to all federal laws regarding emergency medical care.
- Patient Advocacy: Act as a resource for patients to educate them on their insurance coverage and financial liability in a compassionate, professional manner.
SPECIFIC SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES
- Communication: Excellent English reading, comprehension, and written skills. Bilingual skills are a plus.
- Multi-tasking: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure emergency department environment.
- Integrity: Strict adherence to HIPAA security and privacy rules.
- Professionalism: Punctual, dependable, and committed to exceptional customer service and guest relations.
- Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment during emergency situations.
PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Position is 100% onsite.
- Requires working in a 24/7 hospital environment.
- Must be willing to adjust schedule to meet departmental staffing and census needs.
