Overview
The Support Coordinator performs clerical and communication functions in the clinic/unit. Schedules patient appointments, provides courteous reception, answers phones, verifies insurance, registers new patients, and checks patient in/out. Assists with all aspects of patient care and coordinates clinic schedules, patient appointments and follow-up. The role requires working with physicians in the Surgery Department and coordinating scheduling of surgeries and diagnostic testing, including sending pre-op instructions, preparing charge tickets, and compiling letters of medical necessity.
Strong communication skills and computer literacy with knowledge of medical terminology and insurance types are essential.
- Greets patients in a courteous and professional manner.
- Adheres to patient confidentiality and privacy requirements.
- Processes new referrals: obtain outside medical records, enter demographic information, provide information to the team, and schedule patient in clinic.
- Schedules diagnostic testing promptly and accommodates patient needs; provides proper patient instructions.
- Notifies patients of upcoming appointments in a timely manner and communicates changes to all involved personnel.
- Demonstrates accuracy in entering information into computer systems (e.g., Cerner, PBAR).
- Collaborates with hospital personnel to resolve issues and coordinate patient care.
- Prepares charts for diagnostic testing and assists with translation as needed.
- Provides phone coverage and supports other staff as needed; demonstrates flexibility for covering absences.
- Works independently and in a team to complete duties promptly; maintains knowledge of proper chart formatting.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Equivalent work experience in customer service and/or medical office.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Comfortable with computers and medical terminology; in-depth knowledge of insurance types.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Familiarity with word processing, IDX, Cerner, PBAR and scheduling software.
- 1 year experience in acute care, ambulatory care, or surgical center setting preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association preferred.
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City). If no card upon hire, must obtain within 30 days and renew before expiration (required within LA City only).
The hourly rate range for this position is $21.00 - $35.36.
