Job Summary
:
Under indirect supervision, performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations and produces two-dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs used by physicians to diagnose disease processes and delineate normal and abnormal anatomy as well as pathological conditions in the abdomen, superficial structures (breast and musculoskeletal), pelvis, gravid uterus and other areas of the body, obstetrics (e.g., maternal uterus and adnexa, fetal biophysical profile, amniocentesis) and interventional procedures such as biopsies, aspirations and drainage procedures.

- Understands the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation processes in delivering services to patients served.
- Demonstrates operational understanding of the department, including scheduling of patient appointments by telephone, mail, or in person using OPAS.
- Prepares patients for examinations and explains procedures to alleviate apprehension; consults with referring physician and radiologist regarding the patient’s medical history to determine the type of ultrasound procedure required and to correlate history with the test to be performed.
- Demonstrates competence in operating diagnostic ultrasound equipment (real-time and mobile) to obtain quality diagnostic images.
- Performs special application exams/tests, such as assisting physicians in sterile procedures (surgery), operating ultrasound equipment in surgery, and during special applications such as localizations, aspirations and/or biopsies.
- Selects transducer and adjusts equipment controls according to the organ of interest, depth of field and other specifications; moves the transducer over the area of interest and evaluates image quality.
- Inputs test data and patient information into ultrasound equipment to record results and diagnostic data; photographs images of organs displayed.
- Identifies and processes images for interpretation; discusses test results with the physician.
- Uses ancillary devices, scans areas/regions of interest with B-mode, M-mode and real-time techniques, optimizing display parameters and recorded images; notes structure significance and artifacts.
- Operates ultrasound emitters to scan pertinent anatomical areas and records signal response.
- Produces high-quality diagnostic images, considering transducer selection, technical factors, patient variables, image annotation, evaluation, and selection of representative images; recognizes artifacts and improves sub-optimal images.
- Documents clinical activity in a timely, comprehensive and accurate manner.
- Observes applicable regional, medical center, and department policies and procedures; maintains professional standards and effective communication with patients and staff.
- Maintains equipment, supplies and work area in accordance with department guidelines.
- NT certification when performing Nuchal Translucency procedures in the OB-GYN department as stipulated in job code 30818.
- Ability to apply principles, theories, practices and techniques of diagnostic medical sonography.
- Demonstrated ability to operate ultrasound equipment to produce quality images, recognize normal anatomy and pathological conditions, and differentiate disease processes and artifacts.
- Commitment to providing superior and culturally sensitive service to members, providers and vendors.
- Depending on exact assignment, specialty registration in abdominal, cardiac, cardiovascular or vascular sonography may be required.
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate - OB-GYN from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
- Nuchal Translucency Certification.
- Basic Life Support.
- N/A
- 2 years clinical experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in an acute care medical center.
- May be required to stand by.
- Will be required to rotate weekends.
- Will be required to cover MOBs including SCV.
