Position: Medical Assistant I

Medical Assistant I Job Overview

Under the supervision of a licensed practitioner, the Medical Assistant will perform non‑invasive routine technical supportive services of clinic patient care relating to therapeutic and diagnostic functions, following established policies & procedures, and techniques. The supervising licensed practitioner must be physically present in the treatment facility for the Medical Assistant to perform non‑invasive technical supportive services. The Medical Assistant also provides a variety of administrative, assistive & supportive clinical and outreach activities.

The Medical Assistant cannot evaluate or synthesize data.

Base Pay Range

$22.91/hr - $22.91/hr

Reports to

Direct & Administrative:
Registered Nurse Supervisor, Program Manager, Clinic Administrator or designee
Technical/Clinical:
Licensed Independent Practitioner in consultation with the Director of Nursing Services or designee

Qualifications for Medical Assistant I
  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate is preferred.
  • Completion of a secondary or postsecondary Medical Assistant education program from a public school authorized by the Department of Education, or an approved Medical Assistant program at a postsecondary institution accredited or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education.
  • Must maintain a current Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation certification, in compliance with corporate CPR Policy.
  • Displays qualities of dependability and reliability, and is willing to accept a variety of tasks.
  • Can communicate tactfully and empathetically with cultural sensitivity to staff, patients, and family members.
  • Writes and prints legibly.
  • Is well groomed and displays mature behavior.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Is willing and able to work a varied and flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of NEVHC and its patients.
  • Maintains or exceeds Medical Assistant competency levels as established by corporate standards for clinical practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served and identifies and categorizes each patient’s age‑specific group needs, such as infant, adolescent, adult, or geriatric patients.
  • Fluency in English (speaks, reads, and writes).
  • Fluency in Spanish (speaks, translates, reads, and writes) and completes the mandatory Medical Interpretation course offered at NEVHC.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality regarding health care and patient/client information.
  • Utilizes electronic medical records effectively for intake, documentation, and scheduling appointments.
  • Current California driver’s license, appropriate insurance coverage, and a driving record acceptable to NEVHC’s insurance carrier (if required to drive on the job).
Clinical Requirements
  • Family Medicine:
    • Must demonstrate within ninety days of employment competency in usage of clinical equipment and Point of Care testing (e.g., pregnancy test, urine dip).
    • Has knowledge of instrument sterilization procedures and processes.
  • Women’s Health Services:
    • Must demonstrate within ninety days of employment competency in using clinical equipment, Point of Care testing (e.g., pregnancy test, urine dip), and sterilization procedures.
    • Must pass the Family Planning Health Worker written and video certification within six months of employment.
    • Possesses a minimum of one full year of paid experience in Gynecology and/or Obstetrics services (preferred).
