Overview
Position Summary
The Licensed Psychiatric Technician (LPT), under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), provides safe, efficient, timely, and high-quality care. Under RN supervision, the LPT is responsible for the observation of patient/family needs and provides supportive care and emotional support to the patient/family in times of crisis to maximize patient comfort and enhance quality of life. This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Community Hospital. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospitals strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.
- In collaboration with the RN, accepts and processed physician orders.
- Under direction of the RN, provides continuous bedside clinical observations, prescribed care, physical and emotional support to patients as directed in plan of care.
- Reports changes in patient condition and family needs as needed.
- Provides psycho educational group support, contributes to, and supports the therapeutic milieu, and ensures the safety and well-being of the patient population.
- Participates as a team member of the clinical interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate care, support, and resources to patients.
- Demonstrates effective crisis intervention skills as indicated.
- Promotes healthy expressions of patient1s thoughts and feelings.
- Assists in explanation and documents after care instructions to patients tailored to their individual needs.
- Maintains adequate levels of supplies and functioning of equipment and demonstrates accountability of all equipment.
- Demonstrates the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Shows initiative and good judgment.
- Assist in providing discharge instructions and follow up appointments for the patient.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Education
- High school Diploma required.
- Successful completion of a California Licensed Psychiatric Technician program. Associates degree preferred.
- Qualifications/Experience
- Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of experience as a Licensed Psychiatric Technician in acute adult outpatient or inpatient psychiatric unit, background and knowledge of psychiatric illnesses and treatment.
- Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Current California State Licensed Psychiatric Technician license.
- Special Skills/Knowledge
- Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish)
- Basic computer skills
- Electronic Medical Record experience preferred
