Surgical Technician II – Surgery – Full Time, 12‑Hour Evenings (Non‑Exempt) (Union)

Under the general guidance of the Registered Nurse, the Surgical Tech II applies, demonstrates, and possesses proficient/advanced knowledge, competencies, and skills of surgical and aseptic techniques and practices. The role assists the surgical team and performs a variety of tasks in the operating room, prepares, sterilizes, and cleans surgical equipment and instruments, and is responsible for the care and safety of patients.

• Performs responsibilities similar to the Surgical Tech I but at an intermediate to advanced level, assigned to a triad of difficult surgical/operative procedures (Head, Neck, Neuro, Spine, and/or Orthopedic surgeries).
• Adheres to all safety standards and policies (surgical, specimen collection, sterile processing, Title 22, JCAHO) during all responsibilities.
• Applies principles of aseptic technique and initiates prompt corrective action when breaks in aseptic technique occur.
• Maintains vigilance throughout the operative procedure, anticipating the needs of the surgical team and responding appropriately during emergency intranoperative crises.
• Communicates with the circulating nurse and other surgical team members regarding patient status or progress of surgery.
• Arranges and inventories sterile set‑up for the operation.
• Facilitates the smooth flow of the surgical intervention (prepares for the procedure with updated preference cards and knowledge of instruments and equipment).
• Performs scrub role (anticipating the team’s needs, passing instruments, cutting sutures, etc.) according to standards.
• Prepares, cleans, and maintains instruments, equipment, and all surgical related items per established guidelines.
• Transports patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens.
• Sets up the operating room (tables, instruments, supplies) according to the type of case/operative procedure.
• Preceptor role in training students.
• Participates in decision‑making activities related to evaluating and acquiring surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
• Recommends and implements process improvement projects on an ongoing basis.
• May mentor and/or lead other surgical technicians.
• May assist in performing circulating skills and tasks.
• Performs all duties as assigned.

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of a CAAHEP accredited Surgical Technician Program.
• At least one year of experience as a Surgical Technician or a paid Surgical Technician internship completed at Keck Medicine of USC.
• Active practice as a Surgical Technician within the six (6) months prior to application.
• Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Valid Surgical Technologist certification (CST) from CAAHEP or ABHES.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
• Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) – must be obtained within 30 days of hire if not already held.

The hourly rate range for this position is $34.50 – $58.65.
