Position: Patient Care Assistant - ICU Float Pool - Per Diem 12 Hour Days (Non-Exempt) (Union)

Overview

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides nursing staff support in patient care delivery, clerical functions, and unit environment organization, as well as set-up and maintenance of equipment. The emphasis on each area depends on the unit assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Patient Satisfaction:
    Respond to patient call within 10 minutes; anticipate patient needs; proactively make rounds to reduce patient calls; maintain positive behaviors toward patients and visitors; be pleasant during all interactions; provide RN with necessary data related to patient assessment; contribute input into the patient’s plan of care and accurately implement interventions in collaboration with the RN; perform essential skills contributing to positive patient outcomes per routing, MD orders, and RN direction;

    manage vitals, daily weight, and intake & output.
  • Hygiene: bath, peri-care, oral care, HS care, hair care; maintain clear and organized patient rooms; assist with meals/feeding; ambulation/mobility; turn bed patients every 2 hours; transfers from bed to chair; provide fresh water at beginning and end of shift and as needed; appropriately prioritize patient needs.
  • Safety: ensure a safe physical environment and safe operation of patient-care equipment; keep call light/telephone within reach; keep floors free of fall hazards; maintain uncluttered access to bathroom, ambulation areas, and emergency equipment; maintain privacy and confidentiality of patient information.
  • Equipment & Supplies: assist with commodes, walkers, shower chairs, IV poles, beds, tables/chairs; ensure units have necessary equipment in good condition.
  • Documentation: document all care provided, including vital signs, intake and output, meal percentages, equipment used, and patient care activities;
  • Communication: announce presence before entering a room; identify self to patients and visitors; explain plan of care; avoid inappropriate discussions about other patients or unit operations; utilize computerized systems to send messages, document care, and communicate patient/unit needs; follow department communication protocols; report pertinent information or significant changes in patient condition, concerns from patients or families, and patient refusals of care in a timely manner;

    report any patient self-care limitations and actions taken which were ineffective; collaborate with the RN at the beginning and throughout the shift regarding patient care and data collection; ensure continuous survey readiness per regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory & Unit Standards: maintain unit readiness; enforce no food/drink in the nurses station; no open containers in patient pantry; no outside food in patient refrigerator; no boxes on the floor; keep staff refrigerator clean; linens covered; keep fire doors closed; maintain neat nurses station, locker room, and pantry; maintain patient confidentiality.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Specialized/technical training; graduate from an accredited Certified Nursing Program (grandfathered CNA certification requirement if hired/transferred prior to 8/2016)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experienced in a health care setting (1 year preferred)
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CA DPH) – grandfathered from CNA certification requirement if hired/transferred prior to 8/2016
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider – American Heart Association
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) or equivalent; if no card upon hire, obtain within 30 days and renew as required

The hourly rate range for this position is $22.00 - $37.40. When extending an offer of employment, USC considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate experience and education, and applicable laws and organizational considerations.
