Overview

The Public Works Department is hiring a full-time, benefited Park Attendant II for the Parks Division. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting park operations, including patrolling parks and facilities, promoting compliance with rules and regulations, and reporting issues as needed. Strong candidates provide excellent customer service, clearly communicate park rules and City ordinances, and are committed to maintaining safe, clean, and welcoming public spaces.

Applicants should enjoy working with community members of all ages, be able to work independently and as part of a team, and be available for a varied schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

The position may be filled as Park Attendant I or II, dependent upon candidate qualifications.

Salary Range

Park Attendant I: $32.35 - $41.41 Hourly
Park Attendant II: $35.71 - $45.71 Hourly

Definition

Under general supervision, assists the public in the use of City parks, recreation areas and facilities; performs park duties, including administration, safety, rule enforcement and maintenance; performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Park Attendant II is the Journey level classification in the Park Attendant series. The employee is responsible for providing professional and technical assistance to the public so that they may enjoy and safely use City parks and recreation facilities. The employee performs both routine non-professional park operations duties, as well as professional and technical park operation and management duties. The Park Attendant II is distinguished from the Park Attendant I by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned.

Supervision

Received and Exercised

Receives general supervision from the Director of Public Works or his/her designee. No supervision exercised.

Duties
  • Patrols the park to enforce rules and regulations, and to safeguard and preserve park facilities; opens and closes public facilities
  • Answers questions asked by the public; provides assistance and direction to park patrons
  • Explains park procedures, rules and regulations and ordinances to park visitors
  • Provides courteous, high quality service to members of the public by responding to requests for service
  • Enforces cleanliness and sanitation standards; inspects and performs sanitation work
  • Walks through parks to look for areas needing maintenance or repair; provides light custodial, minor maintenance repairs and cleans-up park sites and recreation facilities
  • Maintains daily records of park activities and prepares reports; may write citations when authorized
  • Monitors park usage by the public to enhance enjoyment and enforce standards of safety, civility and cleanliness
  • Works with community groups and park user groups to educate and develop an understanding of the system of parks, park environments and recreation programs
  • Assists with checking in and out, and monitoring reservations of recreation facilities; provides direct assistance to reservation groups to address questions, concerns, or issues about recreation facilities and equipment
  • Assists in community events, including setting up and taking down equipment, designing signage, and coordinating parking arrangements, shuttle buses, and law enforcement services
  • Assists with the planning, training and assignment of work for volunteers programs
  • Provides assistance in emergency situations by contacting the appropriate authority
  • Makes presentations and guides group tours of park facilities, as needed
  • Conducts pre and post trip inspections of vehicles to verify safety and proper operations or to identify potential problems; reports faulty equipment or operational problems
  • Prepares and writes a variety of reports and documentation, including detailed Risk Management incident reports
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature
Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent; and three (3) years' experience in group recreation activities, leadership or interpreting rules and regulations, park operations, criminal justice or socially oriented programs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Public relations in a park/recreation environment
  • Principles of park and recreation facility management, operation, construction, restoration, utility repair, housekeeping, landscape maintenance and equipment repair
  • Park ordinances, policies and rules
  • Proper procedures for writing citations; principles and practices of record keeping and report writing
  • First Aid and CPR procedures
  • Occupational hazards and safety measures appropriate to work performed

Skills to:

  • Operate various types of standard office equipment, including a personal computer and related software
  • Operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner

Ability to:

  • Read, interpret, apply and enforce park rules and regulations, city ordinances and state and federal laws related to the administration of park areas
