The Office of State Parks (OSP) serves the citizens of Louisiana and visitors by preserving and interpreting natural areas of unique or exceptional scenic value, planning, developing, and operating sites that provide outdoor recreation opportunities in natural surroundings, preserving and interpreting historical and scientific sites of statewide importance, and administering intergovernmental programs related to outdoor recreation and trails.

Overview of the Position

This position will manage the Northern Region of the state, which consists of seven State Parks. The exact domicile of the position isetermined at this time, but will be required at one of the northern state parks. These parks include:
Chemin-a-Haut SP, Jimmie Davis SP, Lake Bistineau SP, Lake Bruin SP, Lake Claiborne SP, Lake D'Arbonne SP, and Poverty Point Reservoir SP/Black Bear Golf Course. The purpose of this position is to provide oversight to operations and direct management within the Northern District of the Office of State Parks. This position will work directly with upper‑level administration and site managers in the supervision and administration of field units in the areas of operations, customer service, interpretive programming, maintenance, and law enforcement for all recreational sites within the district.

Qualifications

One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been in the operation or administration of parks, outdoor recreation, or historic sites:

  • Five years of experience in the operation, administration, or maintenance of parks, outdoor recreation, or historic sites; or in parks or conservation work; OR
  • Five years of experience in law enforcement, interpretive services, mobile equipment operation, building construction or maintenance.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the general experience.

Job Duties
  • Plan, organize, and direct all field operations of State Parks recreation sites within the assigned district in accordance with department and agency rules, regulation, and direction.
  • Create and maintain a high performance environment characterized by positive leadership and a strong team orientation. Work with upper level administration to establish, implement, and monitor mentoring program for Park Managers.
  • Communicate regularly with staff on progress toward defined goals and/or required results, providing specific feedback and initiating corrective action when defined goals and/or results are not met.
  • Visit each site within assigned district on a regular basis and complete the site checklist in its entirety during those visits.
  • Provide orientation for new site managers, closely supervising and monitoring progress.
  • Interview applicants and make recommendations for appointments when vacancies occur.
  • Participate in district and statewide staff meetings regularly.
  • Direct and enforce responsible fiscal and asset management practices in all field units of district assignment.
  • Monitor equipment purchases, supplies, and materials for sites; assist in coordinating requests for shop orders, maintenance, and capital outlay funding for projects.
  • Conduct frequent audit reviews of assigned sites to ensure compliance with established procedures.
  • Inspect site facilities, grounds, equipment, vehicles, and site residences on a regular basis to coordinate improvements.
  • Establish & maintain a good working relationship with governmental agencies and local officials with jurisdiction in the assigned district.
  • Provide supporting information and/or documentation on field complaints from customers, and work with agency administration to address.

Northern District State Parks in LA (all are located north of Alexandria, from each state line east to west across the top portion of the state)

Work Schedule:

State Parks are open 365 days a year, however this position will typically work Monday‑Friday unless needed on other days to ensure coverage or handle time sensitive matters.
Travel:
Position requires driving around the northern part of the state as part of the daily shift, with other statewide travel required for meetings, training, etc. A state vehicle is available for employee use while on duty.
